Lost Valley Redoubt

Lost Valley Redoubt is a massive Nordic ruin inhabited by Forsworn and hagravens. It is a short distance almost directly west of Bilegulch Mine, both of which are to the southeast of Markarth and to the northwest of Falkreath.

Be prepared for a long fight. The pathway leading upward from the river leads through several flat open areas where various Forsworn keep watch.

A tripwire for a boulder trap is stretched across the first archway as you ascend the slope. Beyond that, in the first area, a Forsworn has placed the corpse of his Nord victim on a Grindstone. If he doesn’t notice you right away, the Forsworn will mutter to himself about turning the dead Nord’s skull into a blade for a weapon.

Up the slope from the grindstone and around the corner is a flat area around an artificial pool. Several Forsworn will be standing guard here, unless they heard the commotion at the Grindstone and rushed downhill to help their comrade. Two tents and a cooking spit are to the east of the pool, with a chest in one of the tents and several Salmon Steaks on wooden plates around the cooking spit. Above the pool is the diving board of Bard’s Leap Summit. If Fishing is installed, Spadefish will join the Salmon in the pool and can be caught by hand. To the north and west of the pool are two more tents with a locked chest in each.

Up the next slope, you will be forced to go through another boobytrapped arch where a Mammoth Skull battering ram is poised to come down on you. Beyond is a sloped area with a goat pen and more Forsworn. Any attacking Dragons will usually hover above this spot to engage with the Forsworn below. You, on the other hand, will be vulnerable to attack from above by any Forsworn archers or mages patrolling the aqueduct wall above. Through the final archway is the Briarheart’s tent, and he may come down to join the fighting if you attract the attention of every fighter in the goat pen area.

Once you have dealt with the Forsworn and Briarheart here, you can proceed unimpeded until you get to the Word Wall and boss chest. A flight of stairs leads up to the top of the aqueduct, and beyond to where the river originates above Bard’s Leap.

At the top of the hill, a long stone walkway runs above and along the river from the Word Wall at the south end to Bard’s Leap Summit at the north end. It also spans the river thanks to an intersecting bridge, allowing you to visit Cradle Stone Tower and Runoff Caverns without getting your feet wet.

In front of the Word Wall, on the island below the highest waterfall, you will find two Hagravens around an altar creating a Forsworn Briarheart. Having prepared the ritual with various tools and removed the Human Heart from the chosen Reachman’s chest (where it sits in a bowl next to the corpse), they raise him with an incantation:

Hagraven #1: "Heart of thorn... bones of the wild... in life, Forsworn..."
Both Hagravens: "...rise from death, Blood of our Blood."

Behind them, the word wall teaches part of the Become Ethereal shout. You will have to fight both Hagravens and potentially the Briarheart in order to learn the word. There is leveled loot on the blood-splattered altar, along with a boss chest. There is a long ledge overhanging two waterfalls at the top, opposite the hagravens and word wall, which is Bard's Leap Summit.

Related Quests[edit]

Notes[edit]

  • There is a lever near the stairs on the level where the large waterfall lands. Activating it causes a boulder trap to go off. Another such lever is a short distance west on the same level, next to a large rock.
  • Beware several tripwires. They set off boulder traps and a swinging mammoth head.
  • At the summit, follow one of the aqueducts to its base to find gold and a random potion.
  • There is a catwalk over the waterfall that overlooks the camp. If you go on it and head towards the waterfalls, you will see some boards hanging off; this is Bard's Leap Summit. Jump and land in the water, and you will see some stairs. Go up the stairs and you will meet a ghost named Azzadal. Listen to his story of his leap, after which he will play you a song. When he is done, your speech skill will level up by two.
  • One silver ore vein is located left of the Forsworn hut on the level beyond the mammoth skull trap. A second vein is one level above the previous, past the first archway by the southern staircase.
  • There is an apprentice-locked chest a few paces northeast of the forge up the rocks, marked by a yellow leafed bush.
  • In the Forsworn hut on the level beyond the mammoth skull trap are three potions and an apothecary's satchel with alchemy ingredients.
  • Just to the north, behind a small waterfall, is the treasure chest for Treasure Map V, assuming you have obtained the map.
  • The Briarheart ritual can be interrupted. Killing the hagravens will stop the spell, and thus the Forsworn's resurrection. Pickpocketing the Briarheart from the Forsworn Briarheart works too.
  • There is an unlocked wooden chest on its side, located by a small pile of rubble on the far side of the catwalk towards Cradle Stone Tower.
  • With some mountain-climbing, you can bypass most of the Forsworn on the way to the top, and claim the treasure or the Word of Power with less of a fight. Coming from the unmarked Troll den where Trollsbane is found, you can scale the slope with some effort and reach the west side of the plateau near Cradle Stone Tower (right in front of the entrance of Runoff Caverns if Forgotten Seasons is installed). You will have to wait or fast travel if you want your followers to be able to regroup with you. From here, you can simply walk east to the catwalk and only have to deal with the newly raised Briarheart and the two Hagravens.
  • Lost Valley Redoubt also appears in ESO.

Bugs[edit]

  • Killing the two hagravens before they can raise the Briarheart results in the bodies remaining forever because the quest never gets shut down.
  • The word wall behind the two hagravens and Briarheart is sometimes bugged. The usual sound and music it makes still play but no word is glowing, thus making the word unobtainable.
