Drain Vitality is a dragon shout introduced in the Dawnguard add-on that drains stamina, magicka, and health from an enemy. The dragons added by Dawnguard, Revered and Legendary, each have their own version of this shout. Their versions of the shout drain 5 and 7 stamina, magicka, and health per second, respectively, for a duration of 20 seconds.

Notes[edit]

  • Drain Vitality is not affected by Spell Absorption, Resist Magic, or Cure Poison.
  • There are another four versions of the Shout in addition to the three already mentioned. The four shouts, with consecutive editor ids (DLC1DragonDrainVitalityShout02, 03, 04, and 05), deal 1, 2, 3, and 4 damage per second, respectively, for 20 seconds. The two shouts used by the Revered and Legendary dragons have editor ids of DLC1DragonDrainVitalityShout06 and DLC1DragonDrainVitalityShout07, respectively.
  • With sufficiently shortened cooldown (Amulet of Talos and Blessing of Talos), it is possible to stack the effects of multiple Drain Vitality Shouts together, which will cause faster and faster resource draining on the affected.
  • This shout appears in Legends as the Drain Vitality card. For the alternate art version of this card, the shout's effects appear as a red and black aura rather than the usual purple effect.

Bugs[edit]

  • Learning Drain Vitality before learning all three words of Marked for Death may cause Marked for Death to become glitched so no newer words may be learned.
  • Learning a word of Marked for Death after having installed Dawnguard causes one or two glitched shouts to appear in the Shouts menu. It is named Drain Vitality, but has all three words of Marked for Death. The recharge is 12,12,12 and the bugged description says "Drains x points of Health per second for 20 seconds. Drains x points of Magicka per second for 20 seconds. Drains x points of stamina per second for 20 seconds." Using the shout causes the effect listed - although no words are actually shouted by the character. NPCs do not become hostile.
    • Learning the Drain Vitality shouts will then result in a second or third Drain Vitality shout, consisting of the right words of power, appearing in your Shout list. Also, if you obtained the location of this shout via the Greybeards, the quest will not update upon learning the Drain Vitality Shout and you will be unable to learn new shouts from the Greybeards.
    • On PCTo fix this bug open the console and type in the following command: player.removeshout xx018244 for the 1 point version or player.removeshout xx0181b8 for the 2 point version or player.removeshout xx0181b7 for the 3 point version. Also see Form ID for more information on the xx.
    • A way to fix either bug above is to perform the following steps:
  1. Find a save in which you have not learned any words of Marked for Death and have not started the Dawnguard questline.
  2. Delete/uninstall Dawnguard.
  3. Load up the save and get all three words for Marked for Death.
  4. Reinstall/re-download Dawnguard.
