Oblivion talk:City Guard
[edit] question
do guards respawn? — Unsigned comment by Bori85 (talk • contribs) on 17 February 2008
- Yes. They will respawn after the usual three days - as long as you aren't too close to their starting point (in the same cell). –Rpeh•T•C•E• 12:31, 16 February 2008 (EST)
[edit] Images
I think this page would be greatly benefited by images of each type of guard, as neither this page nor the page devoted to the guard armor have any pictures of either. Chunk of Ham 18:44, 19 January 2009 (EST)
[edit] Health
How much health does a normal guard have? — Unsigned comment by 68.41.145.24 (talk) on 29 May 2009
- If it was simply a matter of a few numbers, it would already be on the page. Unfortunately, since guards are leveled NPCs, their health changes every time they level up, depending on a various factors and on their Attributes, which also level up. So really, it would come out as a huge and complex equation; which you are free to calculate if you wish. --SerCenKing Talk 12:21, 29 May 2009 (EDT)
[edit] Imperial Watch Civil War
I was walking in the Temple District of the Imperial City, and a Mythic Dawn cultist ran out of her house and started attacking people. The Imperial Watch arrived and dispatched her, but then they started fighting amongst themselves! There's now several Imperial Watchmen killing each other, and a few innocent civilians even died in the crossfire. Ongar the World-Weary 02:22, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
- This happens all the time. If one soldier accidentally hits another they can end up fighting. Also happens with foresters. –rpeh•T•C•E• 07:10, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
[edit] This has been bugging me.
The armor worn by the Palace Guards and Guard Captains, why cant you take it off them, and is there any way at all to obtain it? — Unsigned comment by 67.167.229.227 (talk) on 14 September 2009
- No you can't obtain them (without the use of mods). The armor pieces are set as Unplayable internally, meaning they are invisible in inventories (and thus you can't take them). --Timenn-<talk> 12:52, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
Ah, thanks :), too bad though, they are pretty cool. — Unsigned comment by 67.167.229.227 (talk) on 18 September 2009
[edit] Glitch (not really but idk what to call it)
It is impossible to head shot a guard. Even up close you without them moving and you aim at the top of the guards head, it shows the arrow hits mid chest level. If done to a shop keeper or another npc it its them in the head and kills them instantly. — Unsigned comment by Forkorpl8 (talk • contribs) on 20 December 2009
This happens with all NPCs if it's not the kill shot, meaning only the kill shot will show up on the head. I think it's because it would be stupid for a character with 5 arrows in his head to be walking around ;) --Nacht 06:39, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Corpse Checking
What is the purpose of the corpse checking animation that most guards do? When they kneel down next to a body. --DKong27 Talk 14:19, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
- Just an extra animation to make them seem more guard-like. Some citizens also do it, for example, Alessia Ottus. --Arch-Mage MattTalk 15:38, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
[edit] Glitch or what?
In the city of Anvil, I broke into the castle for stealing. I was caught by a guard, so I ran to the balcony, I jumped down into the sea and I managed to leave behind the guards. I reached with my own bare foot (no fast-travel) the Valley View Camp, in the Imperial Reserve. I slept there, and, at 3.00 AM I was woke up by an Anvil Guard (!!!) who told me I was under arrest. I had to kill him. I ran away to Nayon Camp (very very far away, in the Nibenay) and there I didn't have any surprises. My question is: how did a single Anvil Guard managed to follow me? Did he stalked me :)? --195.60.143.253 22:27, 16 June 2010 (UTC)
[edit] What is the effect of their spell?
I usually don't see guards casting spells, but I have seen it happen a few times. The only guard I can confirm that cast a spell on me was a Cheydinhal guard and it may have been the essential one that guards that one dude's house. I was behind the houses with only that guard, nobody else was around, and I didn't continue to get hurt once he was dead (or possibly unconscious, I forget). He did the spell-casting animation and it made red rings glow around me. I think it may have been damage fatigue because I fell down from it (went flying actually). What was the spell?— Unsigned comment by 98.28.159.122 (talk) on 4 August 2010
- Star of the West. --S'drassa •T2M 01:59, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Ooh, makes sense, thank ya :D
[edit] Skingrad Guard dialogue
I've been to Skingrad before with my character but never spoken to the guards. The first time I spoke to the Skingrad Guard he referred to me as a stranger, asked me to be polite and keep my weapon sheathed. I'm sure he also referred to Dion. I can't remember the exact dialogue but wondered if it was anything to do with Skingrad specifically. I know that Dion seeks you out when you ask around about Glarthir but I've yet to run in to either of them. HWx 15:35, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
- I believe the one you're referring to is this: "You're new here in Skingrad? Fine. I'll make sure the captain knows we have a stranger in town. Please keep your weapons sheathed, and use your best manners. We're a bit suspicious of strangers here. Don't give us anything to be suspicious about, will you, please?" – Robin Hood↝talk 22:07, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
[edit] Guards Are Not Respawning?
Hey, I know the first question was if guards respawn, but the guards on my save are not. It's the weirdest thing; The guards used to respawn, but then i went on a huge killing rampage with the Cowl of Nocturnal on. The rampage was really huge. I went to every city and killed as many guards as could before they stopped coming. I even went into the barracks and killed everyone. But now it sucks becuase I want to kill people but I dont want to kill citizens because they could be a shopkeeper or whatever. And This type of thing has happened before, but usually i can just go far away from the city and wait about three days. I've waited about twenty days this time and they still haven't respawned. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how did you fix it. — Unsigned comment by Spokaneskater (talk • contribs) at 22:04 on 4 December 2010
- Just shows you the consequences of rampaging across Cyrodiil. Next time don't go on sprees. Kinvalor75 10:42, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Rumor
I was in the market district and was bored. So I started hitting people with fireballs. I got arrested, of course, and went back to the market district after I spent time in jail. And two imperial watch men were talking. One of them said, "Did you see that argonian here the other day, blasting fireballs at everyone?" Btw my character was an argonian. Is this a coincidence or does a guard say it when it happens? For example if you were a breton casting frost balls would a guard say that too?— Unsigned comment by 74.82.64.36 (talk) at 21:21 on 31 October 2011
- That's a coincidence, and just part of their possible dialogue when talking to eachother. Though it's nice to see Oblivion AI getting it coincidentally right at times! Wolok gro-Barok 21:42, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
[edit] Leyawiin Oblivion Gate
Shouldn't the Dead Respawning Leyawiin Guard be put under glitches? Because he starts off as dead but he respawns and lives again. — Unsigned comment by 121.215.144.64 (talk) at 12:13 on 1 February 2012
- I think you're supposed to assume that the guard has been replaced by someone else...someone who just happens to look a lot like the dead guy. Since all guards do this, I don't see it as being a glitch. – Robin Hood↝talk 05:34, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
[edit] Strange guard in Leyawiin
One of the Guards in Leyawiin is very weird: He stands around one position, cannot move, even when killed and reanimated, he has a deformed face that never moves, and he dies with one hit. I've encountered him with more than one character, so this isn't a one-time deal. Has anyone else experienced this? Bauglir100 21:39, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
- If you give me his exact location, I can check in-game and in the CS if you want. – Robin Hood↝talk 02:52, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
-
- He usually stands outside the Leyawiin Oblivion Gate, but he has appeared near the entrance of the Guard's barracks, and at the Eastern gates of the city. He is also completely unarmed for some reason. Bauglir100 04:33, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
-
-
- He's appeared for me too, but he is able to move, it's just his face doesn't move at all in response when the player starts dialogue with him. He's generated always (as far as I know) when the Allies for Bruma quest begins, and can be found outside the Leyawiin gates, and sometimes around the Oblivion gate that has opened up as a result of the related quest. I haven't attempted killing him though Helenaannevalentine 04:57, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

- Well, he can move from one cell to the other, but he can't walk around or fight. At least this happens for me. Bauglir100 05:26, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

-
- It is weird, cause maybe the cause of why he's 'deformed' in such a way, is because he may be the guard specified that is dead around the Oblivion Gate. But I never came across any dead city guards around that Oblivion Gate (I've only come across the dead horse), so maybe he somehow respawned, and this is the cause of the 'deformation'. But then if he was supposedly meant to be dead, why would he have the standard Guard dialogue if he's the guard that's intended to be dead found here? Helenaannevalentine 05:49, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

- Your theory's bang on, Helena. He's supposed to be the dead guard lying outside the gate, but something's causing him to become one of the living dead. Looking in the Construction Set, he's set to Respawn, so initially I thought that on its own might be doing it, but it looks like there's something more to it than that, because I tried waiting the usual three days and he never reappeared. He appears to have been entirely disabled in one game I loaded, yet he appears in a later game. My best guess at this point is that there's some script that's reenabling him at a later part of the main quest. He also has what looks to be a standard guard AI package, so the behaviour Bauglir's seeing where he moves from one location to the other but then just stands there makes perfect sense—he's "patrolling" and what not, just like any other guard...or at least he's doing the best his dead body can do. ;) The odd-looking face is the same in the Construction Set—I suspect that was a deliberate design since he was dead. – Robin Hood↝talk 07:21, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
- I had a feeling it had something to do with it, the moment I saw the topic above mine. Before that, I thought that one particular guard just had a mesh problem or something. I think that this deserves a mention on the article: not only is the initially dead guard respawning, but he's respawning...wrong. What do you think? Bauglir100 14:44, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

- Yeah, it makes sense to me to add it in a Bugs section. In most cases, Bugs sections are done as second-level headers (== Bugs ==) for the entire page, but in this instance, I'd make it a third-level header under Leyawiin. I've just composed a rather lengthy e-mail and am feeling a bit brain-dead, not to mention it was your observation in the first place, so at the risk of sounding lazy, I'm quite content at this point to let you add the info. ;) – Robin Hood↝talk 23:44, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
