Quintus Navale

Quintus Navale is an Imperial sorcerer and the assistant of the alchemist Nurelion. He lives in The White Phial store.

Quintus wears a set of merchant clothes along with a hat and a pair of boots. He wields an iron dagger and carries his key to the store along with a selection of common items and gold.

Quintus becomes a potential marriage partner if you have completed Repairing the Phial.

Dialogue[edit]

His greetings can be:

"My master can be a bit short-tempered, but I've learned so much from him."
"I'll never have Master Nurelion's skill with potions."
"I have a decent mind for potions, but I've also learned how to craft magical items."
"I understand what potions do, but I don't always understand how they do it."

If spoken to:

Why do you work for Nurelion?
"Are you kidding? I came all the way from Cyrodiil just to work with him. He's... he's not the best teacher. But just watching him, I've learned so much."
Do you think the White Phial exists?
"It doesn't matter what I believe. Nurelion does, and it might be the only thing keeping him alive right now."
What will you do now that Nurelion is gone?
"I'll carry on his tradition as best I can. I could spend a lifetime just going over his notes."

Conversations[edit]

He and Quintus may sometimes converse with each other:

Nurelion: "Quintus, could you fetch me a copy of The Firmament? I need to compare the old star charts to today's."
Quintus: "Did they really record the star positions from Curalmil's tomb? There's no way it's that precise."
Nurelion: "Confound it, boy, I know what I'm doing. It will help me determine the season of his burial, which I can cross-reference."
Quintus: "I... I apologize, master."
Nurelion: "Don't waste time apologizing, just find the book!"

Quintus: "Master, I have a question about infusions of arrowroot."
Nurelion: "Damn it, child, didn't I tell you to gather my notes on sub-material properties?"
Quintus: "Yes, and I'm working on it, but I'm also trying to..."
Nurelion: "When I ask you for something, I expect it to get done."
Quintus: "Yes, master, I know. I just want to keep up my own projects as well."
Nurelion: "You can waste your own time, not mine. An apprentice obeys his master. A good one does, at least."
Quintus: "Yes, master. I'm sorry, I'll get back to those notes straight away."

Nurelion: "I'm sorry to always be so hard on you, boy. I just worry I don't have much time left."
Quintus: "I know, master. Don't say such things -- there is always time."
Nurelion: "Don't be so sure. Now, have you finished grinding the dried snowberries?"
Quintus: "Erm... no. Not yet. I'm sorry, I was reading up on the effects of distillation."
Nurelion: "What? You've been lollygagging in idle reading?"
Quintus: "No... I was trying to..."
Nurelion: "Out of my sight!"

Quest-Related Dialogue[edit]

The White Phial[edit]

"I'll... I can... just..."

When you first enter The White Phial shop, you'll encounter Nurelion and Quintus arguing:

Nurelion: "I'll be fine."
Quintus: "Master, you're far too old for this sort of journey. We don't know what's inside..."
Nurelion: "I'll... I can... just..." (coughing violently, unable to speak)
Quintus: "You see, you're not well! Have a seat and I'll fetch you some tonic."
Nurelion: "Bah. If there was a tonic that could help me, I would have found it by now..."

Once you return and have given Nurelion the White Phial, Quintus will speak to you:

"I want to thank you for your help. I know my master can be a bit short at times."
I was happy to help.
"Here, you should have this."
Nurelion only gave me five septims.
"Oh, I'm sorry about that."

Repairing the Phial[edit]

I received your letter.
"Good to hear. You can be a difficult man to find. Thankfully those couriers are tenacious."
You think you know how to repair the Phial?
"I have some thoughts. There are three crucial elements. Some may be easier to find than others. On the top of the Throat of the World is a patch of Unmelting Snow. No heat can touch it. Then we need the tusk of a mammoth, ground to a fine powder as only the giants know how. The final step is tricky. It requires the briar heart from a Forsworn of the Reach. If you can bring me these materials, the Phial can again be made whole."
Tell me about the Briar Heart.
"The final tempering of the Phial was performed with a type of old magic that's been lost since the Dragon War. The nearest modern incarnation of it is the strange rituals practiced by the Forsworn. With the heart of one of their Briar Warriors, I can lock the Phial's magic into its physical form. It's difficult to explain to the layman -- forgive me if I begin waxing alchemic."
Tell me about the Unmelting Snow.
"On top of the Throat of the World is a patch of snow that's never melted. They say the Greybeards taught it to ignore the sun, and heat simply washes over it. The original Phial was made from this snow. We'll only need a small bit for the repairs."
Tell me about the Mammoth Tusk Powder.
"The ivory produced by those beasts is as hard as iron. But the giants have found ways to make it yield. They're able to grind it down so fine that it can be infused into the lattice of packed snow. The finished material has the delicate nature of fresh powder snow, but the strength of the hardest steel."

Once you return with the materials:

I have the materials you requested.
"Thank the gods. I'll get to work on the Phial straight away."

He will then head over to the alchemy table and then upstairs to speak to Nurelion:

Quintus: "Master, look. It's the Phial."
Nurelion: "What? How?"
Quintus: "It doesn't matter. Look, it's refilling with your tonic as we speak."
Nurelion: "Marvelous."

Nurelion will then pass on and Quintus will speak to you:

"He is gone."
I'm sorry to hear that.
"As am I. You acted very nobly in helping my master realize his life's work. Thank you for that. As for myself, I've always been content to simply be an alchemist. I fear keeping the Phial would just remind me of Nurelion's obsession, and how it consumed him. Here, keep it. You are as much a part of its legend now as Curalmil was. I hope it brings you the happiness that my master desired. Now, how would you like me to align the Phial's properties? I'm not as skilled as Curalmil, so I'm afraid it will only ever refill with one type of liquid."

Delivery[edit]

Quintus is also involved in a quest where Sondas Drenim asks you to deliver his note to Quintus asking for medicine:

I have a delivery from Sondas.
"Oh dear. Darkwater Crossing needs medicines for its miners? I'll see about getting this order filled right away. Here, a few Septims for you."

Further Study[edit]

Quintus can request a fish during this quest:

Here is the pigmy sunfish for your next experiment.
"Thank you. Here, this is for you.

Notes[edit]

  • Quintus incorrectly pronounces reagent as "regent". [verification needed — see talk page]

Bugs[edit]

  • If you marry Quintus Navale after completing Repairing the Phial, Nurelion's dead body will show up at the wedding, which will instantly cause the wedding to fail. ?
    • On PC Enter the temple of Mara hours before the wedding starts, then open the console and enter prid 1B115, then resurrect. Wait for the wedding to start and Nurelion will show up alive. When the wedding is over and Nurelion has left, open the console again and enter prid 1B115, then kill, then markfordelete. This will make sure he won't be back at the White Phial.
  • If you never entered the "White Phial" store before (so they haven't talked about the quest yet) and you break in at night Nurelion and Quintus might bug - they won't stop saying "You're not supposed to be here" even if you come back at daytime. "recycleactor" or "resetai" console-commands will not fix this.
    • To fix this, stand outside the shop and use the console codes prid 1B115, then moveto player. This will bring Nurelion outside and from there you can talk with him to continue the quest normally.
  • After marrying Quintus Navale, he will not open shop after moving to the player's home.
