Bruma is a Nibenese city located in the Jerall Mountains of Cyrodiil, north of the Imperial City. Bruma's population is primarily Nords, which is reflected in the city's architecture. It is always relatively cold and snow-covered.[1] The city's population includes followers of the Divines as well as those who follow the traditional Nordic Pantheon.

The Silver Road connects Bruma to the Imperial City, while the Orange Road connects it to Chorrol. Cloud Ruler Temple is located nearby. Bruma has a small sewer system which connects up with the natural caves that run beneath the town.[2] This underground area was used by the Mythic Dawn during the Oblivion Crisis. The deeper levels of the sewers are home to trolls. The city also houses the Great Chapel of the youngest of the Nine Divines, Talos, which dominates the center of town.

History[edit]

The settlement has likely been in existence since at least 1E 1167.[3]

During Varen's Rebellion (2E 576 - 2E 577), Bruma was a base for the Colovian troops.[4] The Second Legion was stationed in the vicinity of Bruma in peacetime[5], although it originally came from the Gold Coast.[6]

In 2E 582, Bruma became neutral ground during the ongoing Alliance War, although it was initially within the territory controlled by the Daggerfall Covenant. The city was attacked by Dremora and Shadowed Path cultists in the name of Molag Bal. A Dark Anchor was then opened above the ruins of the city in an attempt to draw it into Coldharbour as part of the Planemeld, as well as to provide Daedric reinforcements. Several citizens barricaded themselves within key buildings, and the survivors sent pleas to both the Daggerfall Covenant and the Ebonheart Pact for aid.[7] Passing soldiers helped the citizenry recover and fight back against the invaders, and the Dark Anchor was eventually lifted.[8]

In 3E 433, Bruma came under attack from the forces of Mehrunes Dagon.[9] The Mythic Dawn planned to sack the city as they did Kvatch, by opening a Great Gate to the Deadlands and allowing a Daedric siege force to enter Nirn. These plans were discovered by the Blades, but were allowed to continue at the request of Martin Septim in order to obtain a Great Sigil Stone. Soldiers from the other cities of Cyrodiil flocked to Bruma to aid in the defense.[10] Rallied by Martin himself, the soldiers held back the tide of Daedra long enough for the Hero of Kvatch to enter the Deadlands and retrieve the Sigil Stone, ending the invasion. The Defense of Bruma became one of the most important conflicts of the Oblivion Crisis.[11] During the same year, the Bruma Mages Guild branch was burned to the ground in a surprise attack from the Order of the Black Worm.[12]

During the Fourth Era, the Crimson Dirks had members in the city.[13] The Three Feather tribe survived into the era and may have used Gromm's Pass to cross into Skyrim.[14] The Bruma Sanctuary of the Dark Brotherhood was destroyed circa 4E 186.[15] Klija Wolf-Claw, a Nordic warrior from Bruma, participated in a contest between the Empire and the Stormcloaks during 4E 201.[16] In the same year, the city was visited by a party of Mythic Dawn, who kidnapped an Ayleid researcher for use in their excavation of Rielle.[17]

Notes[edit]

  • The Bruma Spotted Pig is a small breed of pig named after the city.[18]
