UESPWiki:Style Guide/Dictionary Layout
The UESPWiki – Your source for The Elder Scrolls since 1995
The Tamriel Dictionary is intended to provide short definitions of words and phrases that are unique to the Elder Scrolls games, or have new meanings specific to the Elder Scrolls games.
[edit] Format
Each word should be formatted using the Dict Title and Dict Entry templates. For example,
====={{Dict Title|word=Aetherius|pron=ae-theer-ee-us}}=====
{{Dict Entry
|type=noun
|defn=#The Immortal Plane
#The spirit realm where the source of Magicka resides
}}
- "word" is the word being defined. If this word has a page in the Tamriel namespace, "word" should be a link to that page, i.e.
[[Lore:Aetherius|Aetherius]]. In that case, an additional parameter "plain" should be used to provide the plain version of the word, i.e.,|plain=Aetherius. - "pron" is the pronunciation of the word
- "type" is the part of speech of this word
- "defn" provides the word definition.
If the word can be multiple parts of speech, the parameters "typeb" and "defnb" should be used to provide the second usage of the word.
[edit] Definitions
The definitions should be a numbered list, i.e., each definition should start on a new line that starts with "#" (the # will be automatically replaced by a number). Each definition should be a concise entry, summarizing the meaning of the word. The definitions should not attempt to provide additional context, history, or advice. Other locations on the wiki are more appropriate places to provide broad background information.
If there are multiple definitions of the word, the definitions should start with the broadest possible meaning, followed by more specific meanings. For example, a word that is used in common english would start with its common (non-Elder Scrolls) definition. The second definition might provide its general usage throughout all Elder Scrolls games, and the third a definition specific to just one Elder Scrolls game.
[edit] Links
Definitions should make extensive use of links.
- The word itself should be a link to a Tamriel page that describes the subject in more detail, if any such page exists.
- The definitions should include links to any game-specific pages that describe the subject.
- If any other dictionary words are used in the definition, those words should be links to the appropriate place. (Note that a link can be made directly to any dictionary word, not just to the page. For example Lore:Dictionary_C#Chimer links directly to the word "Chimer").
