Gaius Maro is an Imperial warrior, an officer of the Penitus Oculatus and the son of Commander Maro. He is appointed by his father to "personally verify the security of every city in the province" in advance of the Emperor's visit to Skyrim. Gaius wears a complete set of Penitus Oculatus equipment. This includes the Penitus Oculatus armor, a pair of Penitus Oculatus bracers, a pair of Penitus Oculatus boots, and a Penitus Oculatus helmet. He is equipped with an Imperial sword and carries a torch.

Quest-Related Events[edit]

At the start of his journey, you will witness his father talking to him, regarding his safety before he leaves.

Gaius Maro "Father, you worry too much. I'll be fine."
Commander Maro: "I know you will. But all the same, remember everything I said. Stay alert, and when you get to the cities, make your observations and move on."
Gaius Maro: "I understand, But you're being paranoid. I'm inspecting security, not charging off into battle. There's not a lot that can go wrong."
Commander Maro: "Son, when the Emperor's safety is concerned, anything could go wrong. Off with you, now. And good travels."
Gaius Maro: "Farewell, father. I'll return as soon as I'm able."

After this, Gaius will share a heartfelt farewell with his lover, Faida, owner of the Four Shields Tavern:

Faida: "Well, this is it, then. Look after yourself, Gaius. You're doing your duty, and I'm proud of you. But you'd better come back to me. You hear?"
Gaius: "Oh, Faida. I may travel alone, but you know I carry you always in my heart. I'll see you soon."

When you encounter him on the road, he will tell you:

"Keep back, citizen. I have important business I must attend to."
After I kill you, I'm going to kill the Emperor.
"What? Filthy assassin! We'll see who lies dead!"
Traveling alone can be so dangerous...
"Is that a threat? Back off, or by the Eight I'll cleave that arrogant head from its shoulders."
(Remain silent)
"I'm sorry, but I really don't have time for this. Move along."

If you try and talk to him afterwards, you will get an angry response from Gaius:

"You are trying my patience, citizen. Back away. Now."

Notes[edit]

  • An NPC by the name of Voltus Agallon originally had the task of checking up on security for the Emperor's arrival. The dialogue Gaius uses when speaking to you, as well as one of the quest-related scripts in use by him still refer to Voltus internally.
  • He cannot be reanimated.
