Thane Bryling

Bryling is a Nord warrior, a thane of Solitude, and the owner of Rockwallow Mine. She has a house in the city but spends most of her day in the Blue Palace. Very rarely, she can be found browsing the marketplace in Solitude. She is evidently having a secret tryst with Falk Firebeard, the steward of Solitude.

Bryling wears an upper-class outfit consisting of a fur-trimmed cloak, fine armguards, pleated shoes, and a copper and moonstone circlet. She wields a steel dagger and carries her house key and a selection of upper-class loot and gold.

She can be found in the Blue Palace for most of the day, from 8am to 8pm; eating lunch at 1pm and going to sleep at midnight.

Related Quests[edit]

Dialogue[edit]

Bryling may greet you by saying one of the following:

"Thane Bryling, at your service."
"I can always find time to share a word with a warrior."

Despite supporting the Empire, she respects the determination of the Stormcloaks.

"Many condemn the Stormcloaks, but I refuse. There is honor in fighting for what you believe."

She also comments on the war.

"This godsforsaken war is dividing our people and destroying our land."

When closing conversation, she may use one of the following lines:

"It's been an honor."
"I'll get back to court business, then."

Quest-Related Events[edit]

During the quest Payment Delivery, you can tell Bryling that you have a message from Pactur. She expresses concern, and upon hearing that they're fine, she thanks you for delivering the message.

Pactur asked me to deliver a message.
"Is everything all right? I've not heard from Sorli or Pactur in some time."
Everything is fine. The shipment will be here soon.
"That's good news. I was starting to fear something had happened.
You have my thanks."

Conversations[edit]

Bryling can be found having conversations with members of the Court, including Falk Firebeard.

Bryling: "Falk, you shouldn't have come. You know what'd happen if people found out about us."
Falk: "I know, my lady. I just needed to see you outside of court, away from all of the politics."
Bryling: "I'm serious. If Erikur knew about us, he'd force you to resign from your position. And without you, he'd have the Jarl bent around his little finger."
Falk: "You're right, of course. But when this war is over, I'll gladly resign and we can stop sneaking around like this."
Bryling: "One more reason to pray for the fighting to end then, my love."
Bryling: "There's something that's been troubling me, Falk. I am hesitant to share it, but I feel that I must."
Falk: "Speak your mind, Bryling. You're among friends here."
Bryling: "You know that I support the Empire, as we all do. However, I fear General Tullius is underestimating the Stormcloaks. Too often the general has lost good soldiers because he did not take Ulfric and his men seriously. If this continues, and the worst comes to pass, Solitude will pay the price. The Empire is headquartered here, after all."
Falk: "We don't have the luxury of hanging back to see who wins before choosing our friends, Bryling. You know this. And besides, no Nord with a shred of honor would consider it. We're no cowards. Have faith, Bryling. When this war is over and Ulfric is dead, you'll see that you were jumping at shadows, and nothing more."

During one of her conversations with Falk, Sybille Stentor gets involved:

Falk: "It's nearly time to collect taxes on your properties here in the city, Bryling. We'll need to visit each home for an assessment."
Bryling: "Is it that time again already? Very well, let's meet this evening and make the arrangements."
Sybille: "Oh, well done. Very subtle."
Bryling: "I beg your pardon?"
Sybille: "Oh, I'm sorry, did I imply that you'd be meeting for purposes other than court business? You must forgive me."
Falk: "Hold your tongue, Wizard, or you're likely to lose it."
Sybille: "I should very much like to see you try it, my dear steward."
Bryling: "Stop it, both of you. You're acting like children."

She may also be overheard having some conversations with Irnskar Ironhand:

Bryling: "What news have you heard from the war, Irnskar?"
Irnskar: "You won't like it, my lady."
Bryling: "I'm well aware that I won't like it. But it's my duty to keep my people safe. Tell me."
Irnskar: "Possession of the holds change on an almost daily basis, but I can report that Haafingar is still secure. Your people are safe."
Bryling: "I'm not just talking about my subjects. I'm talking about my people: the proud Nords of Skyrim."
Irnskar: "I told you you wouldn't like the news."
Irnskar: "My lady, I'm pleased to inform you that you have a new gown for court, specially tailored by madame Endarie."
Bryling: "Really? How did we afford that? Besides, I like the gown I already have."
Irnskar: "Madame Endarie insisted. She made it free of charge, in honor of your lenience about last month's rent discrepancies."
Bryling: "That was suspiciously nice of her. I thought she hated everyone."
Irnskar: "She does, my lady. But apparently, she hates you just a little less than the others."

Unused Dialogue[edit]

Bryling was also meant to play a role in Boethiah's Bidding. Like many of the other palace regulars, she could've helped lead you to jarl Elisif in her chambers if you were on friendly terms with her.

What's wrong with the Jarl?
"She's telling everyone she's sick. But she's really locked herself in her room because she fears an assassin is out to get her."
Assassins? Really? That's ridiculous. Who would want to kill her?
"I know. The poor girl's fright has left her bereft of reason. But there's no talking her out of it. I fear she'll be locked in there for days."
Maybe she'd feel safer with a personal bodyguard? I could do that.
"I bet she would feel safer. And hopefully you wouldn't have to baby sit her for long. Once she calms down, she might start thinking straight again. Let's go talk with her. Stay close. Talk of assassins has the guards jumpy. They might attack you if you're not standing near me."

Upon arriving to Elisif's chambers, she would speak to the shaken jarl:

Bryling: "Elisif..."
Elisif: "Go. Away. Please!"
Bryling: "I've brought a friend. Someone who can help. A bodyguard. To protect you."
Elisif: "I thought you didn't believe I was in danger!"
Bryling: "It doesn't really matter what I believe, now does it? I've brought you someone who can protect you. That's what you want, isn't it?"
Elisif: "Well, what are you waiting for?!"

Elisif would then let you enter her chambers, with Bryling returning to her other duties.

Upon quest completion, one of the scenes she has with Falk would get one different line, but there are no other known changes meant for her.

And without you helping the Jarl, Solitude would be weaker."
Falk: "You're right, of course. But when this war is over, I'll gladly resign and we can stop sneaking around like this."
Bryling: "One more reason to pray for the fighting to end then, my love."

Notes[edit]

  • Bryling is a potential member of the JobJarlFaction, yet will never at any point become a jarl. She's also a member of the Favor252QuestGiverFaction, which is tied to the quest Thane of Haafingar. Since the only other person in this faction is Jarl Elisif the Fair, it can be reasoned that Bryling was once meant to replace Elisif. The thane quest for other holds is also set up to work with both an Imperial-aligned and a Stormcloak-aligned jarl. It's unknown under which circumstances this was meant to happen.
    • The scenes Bryling has with Irnskar, or at the very least the scene concerning the status of the war, seems to have been written with Bryling as jarl in mind, as she explicitly refers to the citizens of Haafingar as "her subjects".
    • The outfit Bryling wears is known as JarlClothesBryling, which fits the naming scheme of the outfits of all other initial jarls. Suspiciously, the only jarl that starts out without this distinction is jarl Idgrod Ravencrone of Morthal.

Bugs[edit]

  • Her secret conversation with Falk Firebeard may occasionally happen right in the Solitude Court, in front of everyone else.
