Modern Heretics[edit]

The comment that "you must have already read Modern Heretics" was deleted from this page; I reinstated it. When I talked to Alves Uvenim with a new character who has never read Modern Heretics the Daedra Shrines topic was not available; I went and read the book and returned, and the topic was now available. Also in the construction set there is clearly a script attached to Modern Heretics that causes the Daedra Shrines topic to be added. --Nephele 01:48, 27 February 2007 (EST)

The question is, is reading that book the ONLY way to get the topic added? Because the statement implies that it is. You'd have to look around to see that it doesn't get added any other way, for instance, in a conversation with somebody else. (Can't check right now, but you might want to confirm that before stating unequivocally that you must have already read the book. --TheRealLurlock Talk 09:28, 27 February 2007 (EST)
Good point. Doing a scan of the Oblivion.esm file, the only place that other than the topic definition itself that references "DaedraShrineTopic" is the book's script (addtopic DaedraShrineTopic). That's doing a scan that includes all the script snippets triggered by conversations and other unusual places. I don't know of any other way to get the topic to appear. --Nephele 09:42, 27 February 2007 (EST)
This topic has started showing up for me and I'm fairly certain I have not read Modern Heretics. I have not started Blood of the Daedra quest. I suppose it's possible I came across the book somewhere else? I think the topic started coming up after I completed the Azura's Star quest, are you sure there isn't something there that adds the topic in? --Vilhazarog 19:48, 27 February 2007 (EST)
There are a couple copies of the book around, and you don't have to start the Blood of the Daedra quest in order to read them. Did you have a map marker for Azura's shrine before doing that quest? If so, you may have added the map marker when you read Modern Heretics. In any case, the two copies that I know of are one in Cloud Ruler Temple (I think in the eating area) and another in the Arcane University (in the Mystic Archives); if you were just rooting around in either of those places picking up random books, it would have been very easy to pick it up without realizing that anything special had happened. --Nephele 22:19, 27 February 2007 (EST)
I'm not sure if this is true in Oblivion, but I know that at least in Morrowind, if a topic appeared in a character's dialogue, that topic would automatically be added. So possibly, just hearing an NPC somewhere say "Daedric Shrines" would be enough to add that topic. If this game works the same way Morrowind does, which I don't know. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:41, 27 February 2007 (EST)
Yeah, I'm not sure either how those topics work that appear just form overhearing shreds of conversation. One problem here, though, is that the topic is actually "Daedra shrines" and those two words (even shrine instead of shrines) don't appear together in any dialogue. --Nephele 23:55, 27 February 2007 (EST)
Well, I hadn't been to either Cloud Temple or the Arcane University when I got this topic, and I found Azura's shrine on my own (well, really I happened to know where it was because of the map here, so I dropped in when I was in the area to get the Star.) I've also accidentally stumbled upon Mara's shrine, although I only spoke to her followers, not the statue itself. Really the only two places I'd been between Azura's shrine and getting the topic is Cheyndal(sp?) and Bravil, so if I'd read a copy it'd have had to have been one of those two places.--Vilhazarog 13:54, 28 February 2007 (EST)
Mara's shrine? I think you're thinking of someone else. Mara is one of the Nine Divines, not a Daedra Lord, and while there are several shrines to her in Oblivion, there are no followers or a statue to talk to. Maybe you were thinking of Meridia or Mephala? Maybe Namira? No other similar names I can think of. --TheRealLurlock Talk 14:16, 28 February 2007 (EST)
Sorry, Meridia? The one that hates undead. --Vilhazarog 14:41, 28 February 2007 (EST)

The full list of places where the book can be found are:

  • 2 in Cloud Ruler Temple (one in the Great Hall and one in the East Wing)
  • 1 in the Arcane University
  • 1 on a Blind Moth Priest (TG11MothPriestMale02)
  • randomly at First Edition book store in IC Market District (there are two chests that may contain it, 1/33 chance each)
  • randomly at Mach Na's in Cheydinhal (one chest with a 1/33 chance)
  • randomly at Southern Books in Leyawiin (two chests with a 1/33 chance each)
  • it's also included in one random loot leveled list, but in the unmodded game that leveled list is not used

So, any chance you went book shopping in Cheydinhal, or in Leyawiin before stopping at the Mages Guild? It looks like you would actually have to buy the book from the merchant to get it (the chests containing the book are hidden require-a-key ones), and then read it afterwards to get the topics. I'm really having a hard time dredging up any other way to get that topic. --Nephele 15:58, 28 February 2007 (EST)

I do remember buying at least one book in Cheydinhal, must have been there! Thanks for clearing up the mystery. --Vilhazarog 12:29, 9 March 2007 (EST)

Can't fast travel, wait/rest[edit]

Alright, I was doing Nocturnals quest, and I got the Eye, and when I left Tidewater cave I couldn't fast travel or wait. I killed some mudcrabs and a wolf, I still couldn't wait, so I went to the nearby Obl. gate and killed the Daedra there. I then ran from there to Nocturnals shrine, pressing T all the way, and still "enemies are nearby". I finished the quest and still couldnt wait, so I did a circle around Nocturnals shrine, killing any creatures and bandits, then I returned to where the worshipers were standing around, still nothing worked. I walked up to bravil and started circling close to the wall, where I know there are no enemies, but I couldnt wait, and then I got stuck in the wall and since I couldn't fast travel, I had to quit. I think it's worth mentioning than during the quest Miscarcand, I had to cheat myself the Great Welklynd Stone because a gate wouldn't open, and the patch that fixes this won't install on my computer for some reason. Anyway, I read something about the King of Miscarcand following you around and you can't rest or fast travel no matter how far away he is. I think the King did follow me around, but I never had any trouble resting, and then one day I got out of jail and the King was there with 2 Gaurdian Zombies. They got killed, and this was long before I tried Nocturnals quest (weeks or more in game days). And I never had any trouble resting or traveling while the king was still alive. Does anyone know what the heck is going on here? Cuz it's making it very difficult for me to play the game.

Thats a very well known bug, it was fixed by the Unnofficial Elder Scrolls Patch. Best thing to do would be to go back and kill the king.

Cowl[edit]

is there any special dialogue with Nocturnal if youre wearing the cowl?75.92.5.255 00:38, 23 June 2008 (EDT)

No, there isn't. Which is why it already says in the notes: "Wearing the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal whilst activating her shrine will not yield any unique dialogue, despite the fact that the Cowl was stolen from her." --NepheleTalk 00:59, 23 June 2008 (EDT)

Required Level[edit]

When it says required level it says level 10. I completed the main quest line and Im level 4. How is this possible. and How do i level fast — Unsigned comment by Gunman1982 (talkcontribs) on 13 August 2008

This quest isn't part of the main quest so can complete the latter without having done this one at all. You will not be able to do this quest until reaching level 10, however. For leveling tips, see this. –RpehTCE 00:48, 13 August 2008 (EDT)

Glitch?[edit]

I can't begin her quest because the game says that I have too low level, even my character is at level 12.How I can begin her quest? 2nd glitch(different user) i'm finding when i get the eye and go back to nocternal that she starts half of her dialogue and then stops and i'm stuck at that.

Eye can see you.[edit]

After doing this quest the third time, I noticed that whenever the eye is in your inventory, sneaking shows you as visible to an NPC, even when nobody else is around. Perhaps there's an undocumented script effect here? --Ghost2 — Unsigned comment by 72.95.224.65 (talk)

i have no idea how old this post is but i would just like to say that i just tried this and i can sneak fine (From Fear to Eternity- Eddie The Head 09:37, 18 August 2011 (UTC))

Incorrect Information[edit]

The guide states that if you have already found Tidewater Cave the map marker will be already pointing there without needing to succesfully eavesdrop. This is incorrect, as when I was doing the quest the map marker was pointing to Tidewater Cave (although the Cave icon wasn't showing) without having found it before. Yoblivio 20:57, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

its mentioned in the notes section (From Fear to Eternity- Eddie The Head 09:38, 18 August 2011 (UTC))

Do you have to be exactly level 10?[edit]

Or can you be over level 10? (I'm level 20) — Unsigned comment by Leveler (talkcontribs) at 00:52 on 29 December 2012

Level 10 is the minimum required level, you can be anything above it. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 01:05, 29 December 2012 (GMT)
