[edit] Infamy Dialogue
When I had a Thief with a lot of infamy and murders/assualts, I was used to guards telling me I was a "Murdering bastard, you better keep your blade sheathed". However, my Mage with three murders, eleven assualts, NO infamy, and 134 fame just started getting the same message. I think people say that to you once you have killed a certain number of poeple, regardless if it was a murder or not. I reached the 350 poeple killed mark when they started saying that to me. Which makes me think a lot of negative/positive things people say to you at the start of a conversation have little to do with Fame or Infamy.--ChristensenCT 18:09, 28 May 2006 (EDT)
- Yeah, a lot of the things people will say to you depends on your mastery in certain skills. For example, when your skill level in Athletics reaches 70 or higher, people will start saying: "You're a fit one. Been running a lot?". It seems likely that something similar would be based on kills, etc --justthisguyTalk 09:21, 15 January 2007 (EST)
- Several of the guard greetings depend upon player statistics:
- "You. I've seen your kind before. You've got blood on your hands. Keep your blade sheathed, you murdering bastard, or I'll put you down myself." If your character is a murderer (using the same definition used for entry into the Dark Brotherhood, so presumably even one murder would count)
- "Bet you think you're somethin' huh? You call yourself a citizen of the Empire? No respect for order, no respect for law. You make me sick." If your character's infamy is >= 50
- "Ah, it's good to see you, citizen! Oh yes, I know who you are. You've become something of a legend in these parts!" If your character's fame is >=50

- Several of the guard greetings depend upon player statistics:
- Ok so I think the murdering bastered line is only triggered if you kill someone recently because I have a infamy of 142 and my fame is 33 and ive only heard that line once and that was right after I killed a guard (It was indoors so no bounty). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Burlin (talk • contribs).
Kinda' funny, I get the "Mudering bastard" line and the "Ah it's good to see you". Once I got the "Ah it's good to see you" just after being told the murdering bastard line. I have like 2 murders (None being cold blooded) 2 infamy and 96fame rofl. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.182.205.89 (talk • contribs).
- What's the chance of this special line being used, as opposed to normal conversation? I've never heard it, though surely I qualify. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Erathoniel (talk • contribs).
- The exact chance depends on a range of factors such as disposition, but it's very roughly 1 in 100. I've only heard it once or twice in hundreds of hours of gameplay. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 04:18, 1 June 2008 (EDT)
- I'm not sure if it affects others, but in all 6 of my past characters, and my current one, Battlemages seem to be extra-sensitive to the 'Murdering Bastard' line. Even when their disposition was 100, I still received the message about 1 in 5 times.
- I think you get that line when you do the mission in anvil where you have to kill the female mage who has been killing merchants. When I fought her, a guard was nearby, and even though she attacked my friends AND the guard, he considered it a murder. That was my one and only murder. The battlemages said the murdering bastard line to me alot.

[edit] Bounty
It says getting caught murdering someone gives you a bounty of 240 septims, that goes up if you do anything else. When I murder someone, I always get a bounty of 1000 septims, even if I do surrender to the guards.T0mm0 15:16, 7 November 2006 (EST)
- I believe Some factions multiply any bounty you gain by a certain number, are you in any factions you think might do that? (Dark Brotherhood maybe?) -Jadrax
- I am pretty sure that the Official strategy guide says it is 1000 septims as well... I am sure that you automatically get 1000 septims.Drake3555 22:24, 3 June 2008 (EDT)
[edit] Beating Heart
Consuming the Beating Heart from the Mehrunes Razor plugin will give you 4 (four) points infamy. I've just checked it to make sure it wasn't from some other source. I had a save game from before and after eating it. It may be worth to add it to the list. MadGizmo 08:16, 15 January 2007 (EST)
- Because I was 100% positive on this one I added it to the list myself. I hope this is OK. MadGizmo 08:52, 15 January 2007 (EST)

- Yeah, that's fine. Feel free to add things like that - if people disagree then they can always discuss it here or correct it at another time :) --justthisguyTalk 09:21, 15 January 2007 (EST)

- Thanks for figuring this one out, and thanks for adding it to the page! I just checked in the construction set, and indeed eating the beating heart is the action that triggers adding 4 infamy. --Nephele 16:09, 15 January 2007 (EST)

[edit] 100 Infamy ....glitch?
Playing on the 360.
I have 100 infamy, and I'm not sure where it came from, or rather I think it "came" from the Grey Cowl, but not sure why it didn’t disappear with the bounty, which did go away.
It's a little complicated, but here's what I "THINK" happened.
I have been using the "nice" home in Skingrad as a base of operations, mostly because of the weapons shop next door, and well, lets face it, it's the pimpest palace, complete with display cases. (note: I chose this as base before downloading the upgrades, i.e. The wizards tower, et al).
Anyway on one of my many trips back to town with my pockets full of loot. You know the drill...load up as much as you can carry via as many enchantments(items) and spells as you can hold, and then head back to base, usually after a shutting down a gate, or raiding a ruin, etc.
Well no sooner did I appear back in town (Skingrad) when the guard wanted to know why I thought I should be allowed to stroll into town wearing the grey cowl, with my pockets bulging with ill-gotten booty.
D'OOOH!
OK so I forgot to take off the cowl (which severely limits the load), and immediately reloaded the autosave, then tried again. Luckily the game autosaves when you fast travel, so I retried, and now when I appeared AFTER taking OFF the cowl, he still kept seeing me with it on.
I don't know why but after about 20 attempts, and various different ways of doing it, I did manage to get past this annoyance. Or so I thought.
Also note, I had been deliberately leaving the grey cowl ON until just before I appeared in town, and then hitting my "B" button just as I "materialized" in front of the guards and then removing it, before "fully" materializing. This seemed to work about 9/10 times, so it was not so bad, for the one out of 10 I would have to reload and try again, which would always work eventually.
Well it "seemed" to me I caught the guards right at shift change, and for whatever reason there was an extra guard at the gate, and try as I might, even if I DID manage to remove the cowl before materializing, he would arrest me on the spot.
Of course I did NOT accept the "pay fine" option. I had well over $20k worth of goods on me, having just closed an oblivion gate.
I am pretty sure I tried to resist arrest, and possibly this is how I got out of it, tried to "elude capture long enough to get the bounty removed (I may be mistaken, it was a while back), or I may have just managed to get the cowl off before he could spot me. I'm pretty sure it was the second option. Correct me if I am wrong, but if I paid the bounty, doesn’t the infamy go as well? (maybe that’s what I'm missing here?).
There is a brief moment when using fast travel with the grey cowl, where the gaurd will see you, but if you get it off in time, he will just come running up and talk to you, but not about being the grey fox, he will just kind of give you the hairy eyeball, if you know what I mean. I have experienced that a few times with the cowl on. It's like he sees you but by the time he gets to you, you remove it and he’s standing there like an idiot with not much to say, except "nice weather we're having", or some such nonsense, if he says anything at all.
Also because I usually fast travel back to the north gate of Skingrad, there is always at least one guard standing right there, so the odd time when I materialize, he wants to say something to me, and once in a while he even does, but most of the time he is either giving me the hairy eyeball (the view changes quickly, so it is facing him, like he wants to say something, but he doesn't) or he doesn’t even notice me.
Well this time it seems to have caught up with me, something to do with the fact I materialized (from fast travel) right in front of the guards, and also I am pretty certain there was an extra guard there, most likely due to a shift change going on.
I wish I could recall if I fled or just kept trying. It seemed to me at the time, I was just so happy to not get arrested on the spot when I appeared, that I didn’t notice my infamy had gone to 100.
I AM certain even if I took off the cowl as I was materializing, he still thought I was the grey fox, even though when I checked I did NOT have the cowl on.
Anyways, to make a long story short, somehow or another I got rid of the bounty, but the 100 infamy stayed, and I didn’t notice the infamy until a little while past it, and now I am several game hours past this point and from everything I have been reading on the net, I am stuck with this predicament (all in all not so bad, just annoying as heck).
Of course now I NEVER travel back to town with the cowl on, and have since made an enchanted helmet which when coupled with a custom feather spell, comes close to allowing me to carry the same load back to towns.
Just wanted to make you aware, so you do not run into the same "glitch". It REALLY seems like a legitimate glitch to me, at least. Your mileage may vary.
Sorry it's a little long, just trying to be as clear as possible, about what happened. (What I can remember, at least).
Short version: (playing on xbox 360)
1) Wearing the Grey Cowl. 2) Fast travel back to town. 3) Materialized in front of guard(s)(North gate of Skingrad). 4) FORGOT to take off the cowl before the guard saw me. 5) Reloaded the autosave, and kept trying but now, even if I removed the cowl, he kept seeing me with it on. 6) Shift change for the guards, so there was an extra one there (or he was just making the rounds, and by coincidence was right where I appeared). 7) Removed the cowl, as I was materializing (Hit the "B" button, split second before the screen finished loading). 8) The guard STILL saw me as the grey fox (still saw the cowl), even though I checked(and re-checked) and I was NOT wearing the grey cowl. 9) Kept trying and eventually, managed to appear sort of 1/2 and 1/2, where they did not see me as the fox, so did not try to arrest me, BUT it did give me the infamy of 100! 10) Didn’t notice the infamy rank right away, since I was so happy to finally NOT get arrested on the spot, and now I am too far past this point to go back.
Beware the grey cowl when using with fast travel!
Also anyone with any ideas or experience with what happened to me is welcome to add their insights.
Cheers!, 68.146.212.129 20:18, 6 February 2007 (EST)AcroSplat (360 Gamertag)
- Long question - short answer: No, Infamy does not go away, nor does fame. They both only increase, never decrease. Bounty is another matter, of course. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:32, 6 February 2007 (EST)
-
- Well KotN does get rid of infamy but there is currently no way to get rid of fame but fame can be cancelled out if you get more infamy. All you have to do it subtract the fame from your infamy or vise versa.
- Have you ever worn the Cowl during a quest which forcibly removes your items? (One example is Sanguine's quest) This can result in a giltch where the Cowl will be removed, but the abilities and enchantments won't. --Lady Azura 19:37, 18 November 2008 (EST)

[edit] murder gives infamy?
well i discovered a way to murder guards without bounty, that is to murder them in their sleeping quarters (this doesnt work for all sleeping quarters but it works in the imperial city). ive murdered over 1100 without bounty up to now, and im filled with money (also my character is godly), so ive decided to murder guards on the streets. i didnt realise every murder gives me one infamy so i kept going until i was at 100 at which point the guards say 'stop criminal, ive heard of you, your criminal exploits are well known. pay the fine, or server your sentence, your stolen goods are forfeit'. since murder is a limitless way to earn you infamy, is there a limitless way to earn u fame? my infamy is at 105 currently and fame at 116, if my infamy is higher than fame i cant go to church to retore my dammaged attributes, so please help
- I think the best solution would be to get the Vile Lair plug-in, which actually gives advantages to high infamy characters. Jadrax 20:22, 27 February 2007 (EST)
- Another option is to get the Knights of the Nine plug in and do the quest which removes your infamy.
[edit] So how much Infamy does each Dark Brotherhood quest give you?
The table says 2, the notes say 1. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by RumblePen (talk • contribs).
- I think the notes are right. Scanning through the end-of-quest scripts, I'm only seeing +1 infamy for each of the DB quests (except for Honor thy Mother, which is indeed +10). I'll update the table accordingly. --NepheleTalk 23:45, 27 June 2007 (EDT)
[edit] Deleted Comment
- Murdering someone and being seen gives you bounty of 240 septims and no Infamy, but only if you hide your weapon and surrender to a guard. If you run around with weapon drawn and are attacked by another person your bounty will increase to 1,040 and you'll gain one Infamy point (tested with Vampire Hunters during Information at a Price quest from Mages Guild). If nobody saw you commit a murder (including your victim), you won't gain any bounty or Infamy.
I've deleted this comment because it really needs some confirmation. First, testing infamy/murder on quest targets, such as the vampire hunters, seems very unlikely to be relevant to the more general case of murdering an innocent townsperson. Second, if it is possible to get away with reduced bounty and infamy, I'd guess there are factors coming into play that aren't even considered here, such as the responsibility of the witness(es). Being subsequently attacked seems very unlikely to change the penalty for the original crime (the game wouldn't keep track of crimes that had occurred in the last five minutes and retroactively go back and change your penalty for those crimes). Finally, I can't figure out where an initial bounty of 240 septims would even come from. The information really seems to need confirmation and/or a better explanation. --NepheleTalk 01:23, 2 February 2008 (EST)
[edit] Vandalism?
I just added a way to get any amount of Infamy to the page. It was in complete good faith. Five minutes later I get a message saying it was "nonsense" and "vandalism". What's going on? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 12.32.36.49 (talk • contribs).
- If you mean this edit, please explain how it is anything other than vandalism? You added one suggestion that may or may not be true and broke 9 links with stupid edits in the process. That is what's going on. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 15:31, 31 March 2008 (EDT)
- For the record, that suggestion is completely genuine and I have tested it numerous times. As for the other edits, I have absolutely no idea how they were added as the page looked nothing like that when I scanned it after my edit. You were completely justified in revoking those changes. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.47.62.180 (talk • contribs).
[edit] Bounty and Guards
When patrolling the recent edits, I found the change from 1000 to 500 to trigger a guard to come after you. I didn't want to change it, as the specific requirements are a little unclear. If I'm reading the Construction Set correctly, if you have a bounty and it's 1000 gold or less, then there's a 20% chance that a guard will come after you, and over 1000 will cause them to attack on sight, I think. Can someone else have a peek and see if they agree? There's a lot of factors that play into this in the CS. Thanks! --Robin Hood (Talk • E-mail • Contribs) 17:57, 29 April 2008 (EDT)
- I can't seem to find the specific AI that causes the guards to come talk to the player. I'm finding the GREETING text where I see the 1000 bounty and GetRandomPercent 20, but I don't know why the guards are even starting a conversation with the player. Does anyone know where this AI is located within the construction set?
Also, I think that this information should be located in Oblivion:Crime instead of Infamy. — OranL 00:02, 2 May 2008 (EDT)- 500 is right. I verified this by standing in front of a guard and using the
setcrimegoldconsole command. A value of 499 had no effect but as soon as I increased it to 500 he ran up to arrest me. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 05:24, 11 June 2008 (EDT)- I updated Oblivion:Crime#Punishment to reflect the test you performed to find out the minimum bounty for arrest-on-sight. Please change it there if it turns out to be incorrect. — OranL 14:05, 19 June 2008 (EDT)

[edit] Cheat
Can I remove Inmay useing cheats? If the answer is yes, could you tell me which ones? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.68.75.174 (talk • contribs).
- On the PC you can use the console command
setpcinfamy 0. Of course, if you own Knights of the Nine you can do the pilgrimage to clear your infamy. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 06:45, 26 May 2008 (EDT)- Thank you. I have already complited pilgrimage, can I do the quest again?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.68.75.174 (talk • contribs).

[edit] Thieves Guild vs. Dark Brotherhood
Don't the Dark Brotherhood give you the same infamy as the Thieves Guild? If I recall you get infamy for completing contracts and accepting them, balancing out the infamy from independent Thievery. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.147.94.152 (talk • contribs).
- I'm not sure what you mean by "balancing out" infamy. Your infamy increases with each TG or DB quest you complete, which will have a negative effect on most people's reactions to you. There isn't "good" and "bad" infamy. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 03:26, 31 May 2008 (EDT)
- What I meant was that you only get half the infamy for being in the Dark Brotherhood as the Thieves Guild, but I thought accepting contracts made it so that you got the same amount of infamy from both questlines. I played around a bit though and it seems you don't gain infamy from accepting contracts.
[edit] Disposition
I noticed here it says that disposition won't be changed by more than 20 by infamy, but on the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal page it says that the cowl can change disposition by up the 40 points. Is this true? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.126.105.93 (talk • contribs) on 17 February 2009.
- Since the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal modifies both your Infamy and your Fame (each of which can have a 20 point impact on your Disposition), the total change in your Disposition can be up to 40 points. --NepheleTalk 18:53, 17 February 2009 (EST)
If you go on the wayshrines quest and put your infamy to 0, will NPCs disposition rise again to their "normal" dispositions?
- I believe the NPCs "check" your fame/infamy to calculate their disposition toward you, so I would assume they would rise to "normal", but I'm not positive. --GuildKnightTalk2me 18:48, 15 April 2009 (EDT)
[edit] Lowest infamy way to get the Cowl
Hi. Was just wondering if anyone knows a way to get the cowl quickly and without getting too much infamy. Many thanks! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 94.171.225.72 (talk • contribs) on 15:36, 22 May 2009.
- There's really nothing specific you can do other than browse through the various articles for the Thieves Guild questline and if there are any that offer more or less infamy, take the way that uses less. --Robin Hood (Talk • E-mail • Contribs) 23:41, 28 May 2009 (EDT)
- You could always preform the glitch to get the Grey Cowl without actually doing the thieve's guild, but of course that prevents you from ever being able to do the guild questline.--Blktiger0 16:39, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Infamy from Daedric quests?
I started the Mephala quest where you have to kill the leaders of a Nordic clan and a Dunmer clan in Bleaker's Way. You would then have to leave something to put the blame on the other clan. I haven't even killed them or went near the place but when I went to the Chapel Alters it told me, "Repent, wicked one!"
It suggests that while doing quests for the Deadra lords, the Nine (or Aedra) believe you are commiting a crime against them but it also says that I still have 0 infamy. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lisirox (talk • contribs) on 14 June 2009.
- I can't find the line you mentioned, so I can't check what the conditions are to have them say that. As far as I know there are no Daedric Quests that increase your Infamy. Might it be you have a bounty on your head? --Timenn < talk > 16:04, 14 June 2009 (EDT)
Well, the line was actually, "Repent your crimes, wicked one!" just forgot to write that.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lisirox (talk • contribs) on 22 August 2009.
