Umbra is a Bosmer warrior who can be found in the Ayleid ruin Vindasel. She named herself after her sword, the powerful artifact Umbra. If the story seems familiar, this is because the sword Umbra also appeared during Morrowind, along with another character who had named himself after the sword. As part of his Daedric quest, Clavicus Vile would like to get the sword back.
Years ago, Umbra's name was Lenwin, and she lived in Pell's Gate where she was Irroke the Wide's apprentice. She found Umbra, although where she located it is unknown. The sword's need for souls drove Lenwin to pick fights with and kill many villagers. When driven out of town, Umbra became a mercenary.
She now appears to regret her actions and has retreated to Vindasel to prevent any further deaths. However, if you challenge her, she is more than capable of defending herself.

- Umbra is Latin for "shadow" or "shade". [1]

[edit] Umbra's Ebony Armor
In addition to her sword, she also wears a full suit of Umbra's Ebony Armor. Her ebony armor is actually leveled. If you are at or above level 15 (the level at which ebony armor starts to appear in regular loot), you will receive armor with statistics identical to standard Ebony Armor. Below level 15, however, the health and armor rating are actually identical to Orcish Armor. The statistics are summarized in the following table. The second columns of numbers indicate the values above level 14.
[edit] Umbra's Statistics
| General Statistics | Attributes | Skills | |||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

She also has her own "Umbra's Restore" ability, which effectively allows her to heal 2 points of health per second. Regardless of your strategy, you should press the attack.
[edit] Unique Dialogue
If you try to speak with Umbra before the Clavicus Vile quest, she will not provide any topics (such as Rumors). However, once you exit the conversation window, she will say one of the following:
- Umbra. It is everything.
- The blade. It hungers for souls.
- Get out of here while you can.
[edit] Killing Umbra
Many of the techniques in here are "my fave"-type suggestions and some have been directly challenged on the talk page

[edit] Things to know first
- Umbra will not initiate an attack unless you are on the associated quest or you attack her first.
- She will be attacking you with the sword Umbra, therefore her attacks will consist solely of melee damage. Because Umbra is enchanted, Resist Normal Weapons effects provide no advantage. The only way to improve your defense is to increase your armor rating.
- The greatest challenge in defeating Umbra is her healing ability: damage has to be done as rapidly as possible so that she does not just heal herself in between your attacks.
- Umbra does not eat or sleep, and as such cannot be killed with poisoned apples or be ambushed in her sleep.
- She doesn't have any resistances of any kind, therefore this can be used in advantage to poison her or make your spells more powerful with Weakness to Magic effects.
- Her health isn't leveled, therefore it's easier to kill her at higher levels.
- Although there two traps in Vindasel, they don't offer a really good method to kill her as they take a long time to reduce Umbra's health and she also has her healing ability.
- Try not run. Being a master in Athletics and also having 100 points of Speed she can catch up with you really quickly. Instead, cast first a Demoralize, Calm or Invisibility spell (you can also drink an Invisibility potion, although they are only found in random loot) to stop her from attacking.
- Khajiits have the Eye of Fear greater power, wich provides the strongest version of a Demoralize spell.
- Characters born under the sign of the Shadow have access to an Invisibility greater power, but try not to do something else while invisible or the effect will wear off and you won't be able to cast it again.
- A spell or full enchanted set with 100% Chameleon will also work.
[edit] Dealing with her
- With melee. If you have a high Blade or Blunt skill you can kill Umbra easily, just keep attacking her without giving her a chance to fight back; using an enchanted weapon with health-damaging effects can make the fight easier. You can also couple your attacks with poisons that can damage her health or paralyze her to make the fight even easier.
- If you don't wear armor or have a very low health you can use a Shield spell to protect you more as at high levels she can deal a good amount damage. Enchanted items and spells with Fortify Health can also help you last more against her.
- With magic. If you have at least a journeyman Destruction skill you can create the next custom spell, a single cast should be enough take care of her. (this is only a suggestion, you can create your custom spells with any effect that you desire):
Drain Health 85 points for 2 seconds on touch Weakness to Shock 75% for 2 seconds on touch Shock Damage 20 points for 2 seconds on touch Weakness to Frost 75% for 2 seconds on touch Frost Damage 20 points for 2 seconds on touch Weakness to Magic 75% for 2 seconds on touch
-
- The magicka needed to cast this spell is 173, the cost being higher at lower levels and cheaper at higher levels.
- If your magicka is low you can buy potions potions to fortify it from the different alchemists in all the mages guild halls except from the Skingrad Mages Guild (go to All Things Alchemical instead) or from Claudette Perrick in the Imperial City; strong potions of magicka are already available at level 1. You can always create your custom potions assuming that you have a good Alchemy skill.
- Out of her range. It is also possible to kill Umbra with arrows or on-target spells, although you will need to be out of her attack range so she can't hit you very often. The best spot out of her range is provided by climbing onto one of the two pillars nearby the tables where she is located. To do this, place the bucket nearby face-down onto one of the tables (try to place it as close to one of the pillars as possible). Once you have placed it, jump on the bucket and then to the pillar, this can take be a little tricky but it can be done. Once you're on the pillar wait for a clear shot, when it hits her she will charge at you. If you are in correct spot she will never hit you, allowing you to keep attacking her with arrows or targeted spells.
- Once you are on the pillar try not to move too much. If you move it is possible to slip down the pillar and you will need to climb again.
- Killing her at level 1. If you want to kill her at level 1, your best choice is to get the staff Apotheosis wich is one of the most powerful staves in the game. It is quite expensive, though, so you may want to earn some money to buy it before facing Umbra. To earn some money, you can sell all of your loot from the tutorial, or go to the Mystic Emporium and buy the set of 16 scrolls that Calindil has for sale, then duplicate any item(s) you desire. More tips about how to earn money can be found here. You will need a maximum of 6000 gold coins to purchase the staff.
Once you have the staff, head to Vindasel to deal with Umbra. You may want to get on a safe spot where she can't attack you since at level 1 your health is really low and thus she can kill you rather quickly. Be aware that Apotheosis has only a few charges so try not to waste too many of them.
