Pranal upstairs in the Roxey Inn

Pranal is a Redguard warrior and the master trainer in Heavy Armor. He can be found at the Roxey Inn, north of the Imperial City.

Pranal has a secret crush on the Innkeeper, Malene, but is too shy to tell her his true feelings, and even though Malene has her suspicions, she wants nothing to do with him. He wanders around the Inn all day long, talking to her and the other guests, except when sleeping upstairs between 2am and 9am and eating breakfast downstairs between 10am and midday. He will offer his services at all times, except when sleeping or eating breakfast.

He wears a pair of doeskin shoes, tan linens and a quilted doublet. His only possession is a small amount of gold.

After you have received the master training reference from one of the advanced trainers in Heavy Armor, Pranal asks you for a small favor: ”Training? Goodness me, I’m retired! I’m afraid combat doesn’t interest me any more. All that matters to me now is Malene. I’m no fool. I know she’d never be interested in an old man like me. It’s enough just to be around her, to be in her company. Well, if you’re dead set on learning something from me, then how about you do a little something for me, first? Something for her, to be honest. I’d like to get her a gift of a sort. Nothing terribly fancy, and something useful... How about a nice silver pitcher, and a set of four glasses. Here’s 50 gold to cover the costs, that should be more than enough. Come see me when you’ve got everything, and we’ll talk more.” When you return with the silverware, he asks you for yet another favor: ”Ah, these look lovely. I’m sure she’ll like them. You just go give them to her. No need to let her know where they came from; it doesn’t matter. So long as she’s happy. Just give them to her; say they’re from a friend. She doesn’t need to know I’m the one responsible.” At long last, he will offer you master training with the words: ”Ah, wonderful! I’m sure they’ll make her happy. It’s the least I can do; she’s brought so much joy into my life, whether she knows it or not. Thank you for indulging an old man’s whims. Now, you wanted to learn something about Heavy Armor, didn’t you? I think I can help.”

As Pranal already admitted, Malene probably doesn't have the same feelings for him, and she will admit just that when you hand over the gift; ”A gift, for me? Oh, my. This is from Pranal, isn’t it? He’s such a sweet man. I do enjoy his company, but I’m afraid I just don’t have romantic feelings for him. Well, these are simply beautiful. Thank you so much. And there’s no need to let him know that I know where they came from. You understand.”

[edit] Heavy Armor Training

The only advanced trainer who can give you the master training reference necessary to start this quest is Varnado. Valus Odiil, although not a trainer, will also provide the reference.

To receive training, he first asks that you buy Malene (the Roxey Inn's publican) a gift. He is her "secret admirer" of sorts, and wants you to find a silver pitcher and 4 silver glasses. He gives you 50 gold to cover the expenses, but there is no requirement that you must buy the items. You can steal the silver pitcher from almost any home, although the silver glasses can be harder to find.

Some places to find the items are:

  • The Chorrol Mages Guild has more than needed to meet these quest requirements, and you can grab them without stealing once you've joined the Mages Guild: one of each lies on the table next to the entrance door, 2 of each on a shelf of the second floor library and an additional silver glass on a side table nearby.
  • In the "Chapel Hall" area of each city's chapel (except for Kvatch).
  • One option is to steal the glasses and pitcher from the bedroom of Countess Arriana Valga in Castle Chorrol which contains 5 silver glasses and 2 silver pitchers. This task is made somewhat easier if the Canvas the Castle quest is active, as it gives you a key to the private quarters, allowing you to sneak around un-challenged.
  • Norbert Lelles in Lelles' Quality Mercandise (Anvil Docks) happens to have exactly four silver glasses and one silver pitcher for sale.
  • Novaroma in Bruma has three silver glasses for sale.
  • Three Brothers Trade Goods in the Imperial City has a total three silver glasses for sale.
  • Thoronir in Imperial City has a total three silver glasses for sale.
  • Two silver glasses can be found in the Gweden Farm Basement, the location of the The Siren's Deception quest.
  • These items can be found for free in the ruined Castle Kvatch.
  • Rosethorn Hall's dining room has six silver glasses on a shelf against the south wall and a silver pitcher on the table.
  • In Chorrol, three Silver Glasses and a Silver Pitcher can be found in Francois Motierre's House, while a fourth Silver Glass can be purchased from Northern Goods and Trade.
  • In Skingrad, in the West Weald Inn, there are 2 silver glasses on the counter, 2 silver glasses on a table and 5 silver glasses in the cupboard, that's total of 9 silver glasses, also there is a silver pitcher on each table. An additional 5 silver glasses and 2 pitchers can be found in Sinderion's Cellar underneath the inn.
  • The Tiber Septim Hotel also has a large collection of silver glasses and pitchers that could be "borrowed" for this quest.

After you bring back the items, Pranal asks you to give them to Malene.

[edit] Notes

  • The Unofficial Oblivion Patch renames the "silver glass" to "silver cup", but doesn't change any of the quest dialogue or stages. This doesn't affect the quest except to make it slightly confusing which items to gather.
  • Before the Nothing You Can Possess quest is initiated, the Roxey Inn is pretty crowded. The room upstairs, first door on the left, initially belongs to Pranal, but one of the other guests will steal it, forcing him to wander around the Inn until 6am, when the bed becomes available.

[edit] Quest Stages

Heavy Armor Training (TrainingHeavyArmor)
Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
10 I've been told that if I want additional training in the use of Heavy Armor, I need to find a man named Pranal, who was last seen at the Roxey Inn.
20 Pranal has asked me to buy a gift for Malene, the owner of the Roxey Inn. I need to find a silver pitcher and four silver glasses and bring them to him.
30 I need to give Malene the silver pitcher and four silver glasses as a gift.
40 I should tell Pranal that I've given Malene the gift he wanted her to have.
100 0Yes I've done all that Pranal has asked of me, and he has agreed to teach me what he knows about Heavy Armor.
200 0Yes Pranal has died, which means I cannot be taught more about Heavy Armor.

Notes
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage quest stage. Where quest is the internal name of the quest, and stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
