Lore:Sleeping Tree
The Sleeping Tree is a strange leafless tree found in Whiterun Hold in Skyrim. It grows in a misty pool beside a small cave, aptly named Sleeping Tree Cave. A Giant encampment called Sleeping Tree Camp surrounds the Tree and cave, and is inhabited by giants and their domesticated mammoths. The sap of the Tree is considered a legal drug and is highly valued for its ability to make people feel much healthier for a time, although side effects include temporary slowness and blurry purple vision. A spigot was installed on the Tree to harvest the sap, and the Khajiit trading caravans will pay a high price for samples of Sleeping Tree Sap.[1]
Several legends exist on the origins of the Tree. Some say that a piece of rock was blasted from Red Mountain during the Red Year and landed in Skyrim, and the Tree grew from the resulting crater. Others say that it grew from a spore which fell from a "floating island", referring to Umbriel, in which case the Tree is a sentient Um-Hist, and bears some relation to the Hist of Black Marsh.[2][3] Circa 4E 201, a Nord merchant from Whiterun named Ysolda hired an Orc named Ulag to visit the camp regularly and harvest the sap.[4] Ulag was killed by the giants, but an adventurer came across his corpse in the cave and became Ysolda's supplier of the drug, who then sold it on to the Khajiit traders.[1]
