The Ebony Warrior in Whiterun
Ebony Warrior unmasked

The Ebony Warrior is an extremely powerful opponent who can only be encountered when you reach level 80. At that point, he will track you down, which starts the quest The Ebony Warrior.

In addition to his already high stats, all of the pieces of equipment the Ebony Warrior carries have high level enchantments which provide him with even more resistances and damage increases. He will always be equipped with the following items: Ebony Armor of Regeneration, Ebony Boots of Frost Suppression, Ebony Gauntlets of Extreme Wielding, and an Ebony Helmet of Waterbreathing, as well as a Necklace of Shock Suppression and a Ring of Peerless Wielding.

He also carries and can use an Ebony Sword of the Vampire, an Ebony Shield of Fire Suppression, an Ebony Bow of Winter with thirteen ebony arrows, and five Potions of Vigorous Healing.

In combat, he is able to cast the spells Close Wounds, Command Daedra, Conjure Storm Atronach, Frost Cloak, and Ironflesh. Furthermore, he can use the Unrelenting Force and Disarm dragon shouts. He is completely immune to all forms of paralysis, Vampiric Grip, and the Ice Form and Bend Will shouts. He cannot be ragdolled by the Cyclone shout, though he will take health damage from it. He is also completely immune to the Wabbajack but can be killed instantly by Mehrunes' Razor. His elemental resistance perk combined with the enchantments on his boots, necklace, and shield make him essentially immune to spell damage but as long as his shield is unequipped he will be somewhat susceptible, particularly to fire. He is susceptible to the knockdown effect from Shield Charge, and can be ragdolled by a werewolf's moving and sprinting power attacks.

Once you have defeated him, you may loot his body for his fully enchanted set of equipment and a full collection of six flawless gems, a human heart, a daedra heart, and a filled black soul gem.

Related Quests[edit]

Quest-Related Dialogue[edit]

Upon reaching level 80, he may approach you in one of the major cities, telling you:

"The time has come."
It has? What do you mean?
"I have done all that can be done. There is nothing left. No quests to be undertaken. No villains to be slain. No challenges to face. Except for you. You are my last challenge. Only you can send me to Sovngarde with honor. Make your preparations. When you are ready, come find me at my last vigil."

When you meet him at his last vigil, he will not acknowledge your motive for coming to see him, and will only respond with generic comments until you attack or provoke him. After doing so, he will fight back, occasionally using taunts such as:

"Show me you are the hero they say you are!"
"I am the Ebony Warrior!"
"Kill me already!"

Other combat dialogue which he may say when you attack him includes:

"That's the spirit!"
"Hit me harder!"

Upon dying, he will say:

"At last. Sovngarde..."

Notes[edit]

  • He has the exact same face as Nazir.
  • While he can be harmed by falling damage, you must damage him after he lands but before he begins the animation for standing back up for the damage to take effect. Otherwise, he can survive any fall and will actually be restored to full health after he gets back on his feet.[verification needed — see talk page]
  • He is one of the tallest NPCs in the game, since he is uniquely scaled by 1.25
  • He is the only non-Nord, non-Elder NPC capable of using dragon shouts.
  • Despite being a Redguard, the Ebony Warrior will say "At last, Sovngarde..." upon being killed.
  • He has a unique perk with an ID of DLC2EbonyWarriorPickPocketMod. This perk reduces your chance to successfully pickpocket him by 110%. You can still pickpocket all his equipment with a sufficiently high skill along with Fortify Pickpocket effects.
  • He is one of the named NPCs specifically immune to Paralyzing effects from equipment and poisons.
  • Because of the Ebony Warrior's Reflect Blows perk, striking him with a one-handed or two-handed weapon power attack can result in damage being reflected back and potentially killing you. Bow attacks do not incur this penalty and using a strong Fortify Archery potion and shooting him while sneaking can be an easier method for dispatching him quickly.
  • The Ebony Warrior has a much faster walk and run speed than many other NPCs, meaning he can close on you very quickly if you manage to push him back (such as with Unrelenting Force).

Bugs[edit]

  • Ranged attacks that should strike his head will instead pass through him with no effect, due to his hitbox not covering his body above the shoulders.
  • Even if you manage to pickpocket all of his equipment off him on your first meeting, he will spawn at the Last Vigil with a full set of his armor, but no weapons. This may also happen in the city if you save, reload, and turn him hostile. ?
  • If you have an essential follower with you (such as one from a side quest) he will continuously attack the follower even though it cannot be killed, ignoring your character completely even though you are the one who challenged him, allowing you to attack him until he is killed, or perform a sneak attack that otherwise wouldn't be easily done. ?
