should daggerfall:switches be made?[edit]

in the information about switches section, i noticed while looking for links to add sources that there was no daggerfall page that has info on switches (if there is and i missed it, please let me know). should the page be made or should it be avoided? Fisnly (talk) 14:20, 13 June 2022 (UTC)

Article in incorrect namespace?[edit]

According to the prefix index, this article is in the main namespace listed as "Daggerfall:Hints". This page is also listed under the Daggerfall namespace under "Hints". Editors and administrators alike have tried to toggle the page's status by deleting it, moving it around, and neither have worked successfully. Since this is not causing anything but cosmetic problems for the prefix index, let's just leave this page alone until Daveh can figure out what's wrong. --Aristeo 21:16, 20 September 2006 (EDT)

I happened to come across an explanation for this problem and how to fix it on mediawiki. I figured I'd add a link here in case we ever want to fix this. --Nephele 00:23, 10 January 2007 (EST)
18 months later, problem has been fixed :) There used to be two files named "Daggerfall:Hints" -- one in the main namespace and one in the Daggerfall namespace. I was able to rename the main namespace one to "Daggerfall-Hints". Which revealed that the problem file plaguing us for three years was a test file, created by the user "Test" on Feb 8 2005. The entire text of which was "Testing hints page" (it was created back when Daveh was first setting up and experimenting with the wiki). I speedy-deleted the problem file. End result: we now have only one file identified as "Daggerfall:Hints". --NepheleTalk 17:28, 12 June 2008 (EDT)

This is a mess[edit]

The subject matter here is all over the place. As I try to clean up other sections, I will probably do some copy and paste work utilizing some of it. But completely revamping this section might be hopeless given my limited amount of time that I can spare to this wiki.

That being said, is there another way to format lists that would improve the list of Inns? Perhaps some way to lessen the page length? — Unsigned comment by James Wildspell (talkcontribs)

Yep, it's a mess ;)
I've done a few formatting tweaks. In particular, the inns have now been stuffed into a table so they take up less space on the page. And the table of contents now only lists the main sections so it's not swamped with sub-sub-sections. But given that I haven't played Daggerfall, formatting is really all I can help with.
What's been done with a couple of other pages that started out as "Hints" pages is that they were morphed into FAQs pages (e.g., Oblivion:FAQs, Shivering:FAQs). Not that a name change really helps you too much. But perhaps some of the other ideas that have been (somewhat) used on those pages will help. The focus has been on trying to move the content wherever possible into more specific articles (perhaps tying into your idea of copy-and-paste use of the content), and then turn the main Hints/FAQs page into brief summaries that contain as many links as possible to related articles. So the page becomes more like another portal to the Daggerfall namespace, pointing readers to information that might not be easy to find from the main Daggerfall page.
Not that I'm suggesting you need to try to take on all or even part of this! But if, while you're working on other articles, you notice sections from the Hints that fit in elsewhere, I'd say you should feel free to move the content, and replace that section with a link to the new location. --NepheleTalk 00:48, 18 February 2008 (EST)
For the "Easy Money and Experience Method" it seems to me that if there was a page listing all of the inns in Daggerfall, then you could just put a list here of the inns this doesn't work at, and the length of this section would be significantly reduced. The page Daggerfall:Tavern doesn't seem to have anything like this...forgive me if I'm missing something with the redesign, I'm new. :) --Llareian 14:29, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Distorted Towns[edit]

I do not believe I have ever done this, and at present it is quite impossible for me to explore this on my own. What is a Distorted Towns? -- Uniblab 15:40, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

It seems clear to me, but that might be because I know what it is. Basically, the ground in the town will not be flat. It will have the ditches and mounds normally only found in the wilderness. -- DelphiSnake 13:46, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
What is the point of having this on the Hints page? It seems more like a glitch, or even a cheat. --HunterZ 05:34, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
I don't know who added this section to the article, but they probably placed it here as something interesting to see in-game. Same deal for the section on furniture stores. Neither have any impact on gameplay. -- DelphiSnakeT+C 21:30, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
This page continues to need a lot of cleanup (12 years later!) but I do see a value in maintaining interesting glitches and trivia like this somewhere on the wiki, so I hope in the eventual cleanup process details like this are not lost. Sporky (talk) 11:56, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

Clean up[edit]

So here is what I want\need for my sand box that any of you can help on: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/User:Wolfy%5CSandbox

  1. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Hints#Easy_Money_and_Experience_Method
  • Get rid of the boxes, as this takes up to much room and list way to many inns
  • just at first look it seems like it works with any inn that has a footlocker but I'm not sure if so that will free up space
  1. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Hints#Furniture_Stores
  • get rid of this, maybe make another page.
  • get rid of this, it holds no value to the topic, may make another page for it, or section, but a whole new start is needed if so.
  1. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Hints#Stat_Decreases
  • Seems unneeded, at least in this page.
  1. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Hints#A_Secret_Dungeon This is just a... I don't even know.
  • If its part of the main quest its not a secret Dungeon, if its a glitch to get there,it should be mention on said quest page not here
  1. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Hints#Information_on_Switches
  • this should go in to Exploring dungeons, which IMO should be its own section of this page as a few others can go in to it, just making this page a LOT more cleaner then it is
  1. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Hints#Immune_to_Disease_Bug
  • this should be in bugs page and rewrote
  1. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Hints#Get_Ebony.2C_Orcish.2C_.26_Daedric_items
  • this is way to long and I'm unsure what to do about it

and last but not least a source for the The (In)Famous Beginner's Guide to Daggerfall by Mark Stinson for a start on the sourcing his claims.

Those are just SOME of the problems, the main thing is

  • its all in first person
  • it is over 18 freaking pages long

I do want to point out it's well writing grammar wise and spelling but other then that its bad Any ideas\tips\advice? Wolfy 22:03, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Might the furniture store section (with a major rewrite) go in the article Daggerfall:Store/Item_Locations? --Llareian 14:34, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Bugs to Avoid: The void and levitating needing verification[edit]

This is true and used to be a very well known and exploited 'feature' of the game known as 'void ranging.' If a player enters the void without levitation, they will fall. -- DelphiSnake 10:19, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Attempting to clean up this page[edit]

I see there have been efforts above from over a decade ago at addressing how to clean up this page. I plan on trying to tackle this project, and will lay out my assessment here according to the Contents. I do this in case I fail in these efforts, so that someone else can read the rationale and perhaps carry it out.

The bulk of the issue is that some of these are "normal" hints, but many of them are about taking advantage of exploits, which belong on a separate "Exploits and Glitches" page. I plan on making that page first in order to duplicate many of the exploits mentioned here before removing them from this page.

Quest Related Hints: Does not need to be its own heading, but deserves a link near the top to direct players to that page.

General Gameplay Tips: A solid section which I have already overhauled.

Making Money - Graverobbing: A good tip that can remain on this page.

Making Money - Thieving: A mix of genuine tips and exploits that belong on an Exploits page, written in a very casual style.

Making Money - Easy Money and Experience Method: I have no idea what this user is talking about. It is illegal to rest within cities, and even if you loiter through the night, no enemies spawn. Must've been an earlier patch? Section should be deleted, perhaps with the exception of seeking out fights with human enemies for level-appropriate gear.

Making Money - The Rusty Ogre Lodge: A classic, longstanding exploit which belongs on an Exploits page.

Distorted Towns: Not a tip and is not even beneficial to the player. Belongs on a Glitches page.

Saving Screenshots: Good information, but does not belong on a gameplay-focused page. Not sure of the appropriate section for such out-of-game info. I believe there should be a separate page for this, which could also include information on configuring DOSBox, such as changing the audio settings to get higher quality MIDI, etc.

Weightless Equipment: Belongs on an Exploits page.

Stat Decreases: Several players attempt to research a stat-decreasing glitch, which may not even be in the latest patched versions of the game anymore.

Information on Switches: Actually good info that could be touched-up to help players who may not even be aware of all the objects that are possible to activate within dungeons.

Notable Bugs: Belongs on a Glitches page, other than number 8, which seems like intended behavior that could remain on the Hints page.

Immune to Disease Exploit: Belongs on an Exploits page. Also contains some incorrect info about lycanthropy/vampirism infection, but could be modified into advice about how to intentionally get infected for the Hints page.

Furniture Stores: Already addressed by another page. Can be deleted entirely.

Starting Dungeon Spoilers: If this info needs to be preserved anywhere, it should be on the Privateer's Hold walkthrough, but it can probably be safely deleted.

Levitating Tricks: Hard to even address. I suppose levitating a horse is useful information and probably not even an exploit. The rest is a hodgepodge of info. I can't even reproduce "Buggy Levitate." Jumping Tricks partly belongs in a section about tips to increase skills, and partly just lists an exploit. Flying Without Levitation is an exploit.

A Secret Dungeon: Belongs on an Exploits page.

Get Ebony Orcish, & Daedric items: Since Luck does not influence your item-finding at all, this advice amounts to "check stores repeatedly for better gear." Some exploits in terms of rerolling store contents.

Not all Item Powers work: This section contains no information and simply tells people to read someone else's guide, hosted elsewhere, which we are then advised not to trust due to being full of errors.

"Potent vs." Powers: An experimental/anecdotal account disputing the value of Potent Vs. as an enchantment. I'm not even sure this should be confidently placed on a Glitches page.

Vampiric Effect: A good tip for a useful enchantment. Perhaps obvious (good enchantments are good!), but I think could be rationalized as a worthwhile entry on the Hints page for people who don't want to have to rest after combat so often.

A Trick to raise Magic Skills: a good hint for people who play sorcerer or non-regen builds, and advice that belongs alongside the Jumping one above for leveling your skills.

Looting From A Stack Of Bodies: good info that should be retained on this Hints page.

I have performed the above edits across Daggerfall's pages. Sporky (talk) 12:26, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
