[edit] Quick Walkthrough
- After successfully completing a quest for Prince Lhotun of Sentinel, Queen Akorithi contacts you by letter asking your services.
- The queen wants you to retrieve a painting from the dungeon of Castle Wayrest, but doesn't say why.
- After a long search and hard battle you retrieve the painting, only to notice it is magical and appears to be animated.
- In order to see the painting animate, you must USE it (click the USE button and then click the painting).
- When you return the painting to the Queen it's better to say you have not viewed the painting when she asks you.
[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
One day, soon after finding the fate of Prince Lhotun's brother, you receive a letter from his mother, Queen Akorithi.
- Dear (player name),
-
- Your presence is our court is desired
- before the end of the next season.
- Prince Lhotun has recommended you with
- high praise. I await your arrival.
- Akorithi
- Queen of Sentinel
Not quite sure when the next season ends (the general stores have been out of calendars for many years) you hurry to Sentinel Castle as quickly as you can.
- (player name)! Welcome to Sentinel.
- I trust you have had a comfortable
- stay so far. Let me get right to the
- point. My son, Prince Lhotun, says
- you are a well respected and trusted
- (player race). I have need of your sort.
- I am willing to pay you (some) gold
- to infiltrate Castle Wayrest for me.
- Will you do it?
Checking your schedule for the next few weeks you see you're relatively free and so you accept, even though the pay isn't that great considering the task of infiltrating a heavily guarded castle.
- What Bounty! There is an item, a
- painting, that is hidden somewhere
- within Castle Wayrest. I desire
- this item for reasons you need not
- worry about. Bring it to me and I
- will pay your (some) gold.
So it's a painting they've gotten me to fetch this time. The hard part will be getting in Castle Wayrest, and out again...in one piece. Hoping you haven't bitten off more than you can chew you head for Wayrest and your fate.
[edit] Finding the Painting
In the castle dungeons you will encounter mostly knights, orc shamans, centaurs, wraiths, and possibly vampires.
Starting from the dining hall take the door to the north. As soon as you open the door the royal knights will start to attack you. One of them is right in front of you in the hallway. From the intersection go west and up the stairs. Follow the hallway until you reach a room, you will encounter an undead foe on your way.
In this room there are many open coffins and corpses as well as a caster in the room to the north. On the south wall there is a red brick teleporter. Head on through it.
You will be teleported into some sort of armory. A knight will also be in this room. Just use the nearby teleporter to proceed to the next area.
You will be teleported to the north-west corner of a tiny room. There is nothing but a telporter there, right behind you. Exit the room through this teleporter.
You will find yourself in a room with a torture instrument and an enemy. Leave the room through the south door and follow the hallway through the west door, go south.
Follow the hallway west, past an intersection and go down the stairs. Follow the hallway further past a secret door and go up the stairs. Go through the door at the end of the end hallway, you have reached the sewers.
Walk on the ledge of the sewer if you don't want to fall into the water or levitate. The water usually contains slaughterfish & dreugh, but it can also contain undead and, at higher levels, lamiae. Follow the sewers to the west side, There is a small underwater passage which leads to an inner chamber (watch out for water creatures). Crouch and swim through that passage, be mindful of slaughterfish at the other side. Climb out of the water and go through the door at the east side of the chamber. The door will be locked.
Follow the stairs up and go east through the window. It may take some tries to get through. The best way is standing sidewards to the window, than crouch and strafe to the side until you start climbing through the window. Go up the stairs and head west. Go through the door at the end of the hallway.
You will find yourself in some sort of meeting-room. Go through the south door, which will be locked. Go up the stairs and head south.
Follow the hallway further south and turn east at the intersection. Go past a secret door and turn south.
Head further south and go down the stairs. Follow the hallway and go through the door. Go down the stairs, follow the hallway and go through the door at the end. You have reached the room where the painting is located.
If you approach the painting one knight will come out from each of the doors, so be prepared for them. Take the painting and if you use it, it will show you the last minutes of Lysandus' life.
As you examine the painting a little more closely you notice it definitely isn't a normal painting in any respect.
- The scene in the painting shifts and
- twists. You can clearly see the inside
- of a tent. Several men in the livery of
- Wayrest are intensely debating with a
- man bearing the coat of arms of Daggerfall.
- One of the Wayrest men slips behind the
- Daggerfall man, draws a dagger and
- casually slides it between his ribs.
- The image fades as the life ebbs from
- his body.
The painting depicts several Wayrest men arguing with a Daggerfall soldier and one of the men kills the soldier. Queen Akorithi refuses to explain any of this to you but the Daggerfall soldier can only be King Lysandus. In Helseth's quest, he tells you that Wayrest advisers met with Lysandus before the Battle of Cryngaine Field. An observant player should be able to put two and two together.
[edit] Getting out of the Dungeons
If you have no recall spell, you must return to the last room where you have been teleported to, to get out of the dungeons. This was the room with the torture instrument and the orc shaman.
From this room, walk a few steps to the east and enter the room. There is a secret door on the east wall of this room, open it and go through the door.
Follow the orange colored passage. The stairs in this passage are rather high, you must either climb them, jump up, or use levitation to move onward. Follow the passage upwards until you come to a small intersection and a handwheel. Turning this handwheel, will open the magical locked door at the end of the passage. Follow the passage further up until you reach a room.
Leave the room trough the west door, cross the hallway and enter the room on the other side. Go through the red brick teleporter in this room.
You will emerge in a fountain and a knight will be just in front of you. Walk down the stairs and at the intersection turn north. Go north until you reach a door. Enter the room and leave it trough the teleporter on the south wall.
You will be teleported to yet another room, leave the room through the secret door on the south wall and go through the orange colored passage. Once you reach the hallway go north and enter the room. There will be an undead foe in this room. Leave the room through the red brick teleporter.
You will be teleported to the room where you started your teleporter-journey. There will be still the orc shaman, provided you didn't kill him when you entered the room for the first time. Leave the room with the coffins through the east door.
Return back to the dining hall of the castle, but all guards will now be in attack-mode, so leave the castle as quickly as possible to avoid unnecessary encounters.
Return back to Queen Akorithi in Palace Sentinel and give her the painting.
When you give the painting to the queen you decide not to mention what you saw, nor do you try to use it again. Had you tried to use it you are sure the queen would have been displeased.
- Didn't Use It
- Excellent. Its properties are
- inappropriate for those not of royal
- blood. You have shown yourself to be
- not only loyal, but also obedient.
- Used It
- You presume much (player name).
- What you saw is not for the prying
- eyes of the masses. It concerns
- matters of royalty and will be dealt
- with by royalty.
