[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
After creating your character, you begin the game in a cave near a campfire. The first thing you should do is equip any weapons you have in your inventory and save your character. Go south and out of the cave, there is a secret door into another room at the end of the passage. The first enemy you will encounter in the game is a rat guarding a treasure pile. Kill the rat and take the treasures, then climb up the stairs to the west.
Proceed down the long corridor. After taking on a Bat, the first door on your path leads to a room with an Imp, so if you don't have a steel weapon yet, you may want to come back to it later. Without one, the Imp will easily kill you with its spells.
Follow the corridor further until you reach a second door. This second room contains a rat. As you continue, you'll see a third door and stairs leading down to the east. It is worthwhile to take this little detour down, because at the bottom is the lair of a thief, whom you can usually take by surprise using your backstab skill. He is well equipped with some nice armor and weapons, but a deadly foe at lower levels.
Keep going down the hallway until you come to some stairs leading upwards, and a bat. Go up the stairs and through the door. You'll find yourself in a room facing an archer behind a U-shaped table. It is advisable to go around the table and engage the archer in melee to avoid him shooting at you from a distance or run up to him and get a few melee hits in and back away between each shot, because the archer will not walk around the table. Leave the room through the north door.
Now you are in a big room with a grand staircase leading to a throne on a platform. Kill the bat flying around at the bottom of the room, and save. At the top of the massive staircase is a Skeletal Warrior and that smile doesn't mean he's friendly, or easy to fight at low levels. Fight him or run away; jump onto the raised platform with the throne and pull the lever beside the platform. The throne will rise up, allowing you to reach the balcony above and move on to the next level. You can also try to climb the wall to reach the balcony.
An alternative way to get past the skeleton is longer, but much safer. Go around the left side of the staircase, moving past the support and to the corner. To the right you can see a part of the wall on which the textures don't exactly match the ones around it. It is a secret door. Go through and continue straightforwardly all the way to and through the brown passage. Watch out for the two archers in the two rooms near the start of the brown passageway. Climb the stairs and go through the door at the end. It will lead to the balcony above the throne.
At the balcony follow the corridor up and around (killing the Rat along the way) and take the first door you come across. You'll face three monsters at once in that room - a rat, a bat and an imp. If you're quick, you should be able to lure the bat outside and kill it, then move around the rat to take out the imp, then finally get the rat.
The exit looks like a cave with a skull in it along the wall. Exit the dungeon, breathe that fresh pixelated air, then press onward to Daggerfall City.

[edit] Notes
- It's here that you'll learn how to deal with the many dungeons of Daggerfall. By the time you leave Privateer's Hold you should be second level, and have a full set of armor (assuming you did not bar early materials at character creation) and at least one decent weapon. While the above walkthrough will tell you how to immediately exit the cavern, feel free to leave the beaten path while you are exploring.
- Be sure to equip your character before you start! Click your inventory bag -- you should have 1 and probably 2 weapons. Using your bare hands at this stage is a bad idea.
- Many dungeons have a throne room layout the same as Privateers hold.
- All dungeon exits are stone arches with skulls in it.
