[edit] Quick Walkthrough
- You learn from Prince Lhotun that Medora is possibly trapped on the Isle of Balfiera. After finding her you discover this is true and that only a great unicorns horn from Shedungent can free her.
- Travel to Shedungent (home of Nulfaga) to find and retrieve the unicorn's horn.
- Returning the horn to Medora to free her and gain her favor for later quests.
[edit] Detailed Walkthrough
I learned from Prince Lhotun in a previous quest that King Lysandus took his court sorceress, Medora, as a lover. I entered Direnni Tower without any knowledge of where to find Medora. The passage ahead of me was blocked by some sort of large, immovable stone, so I took the door on my left when I entered. This room was large and was so tall I couldn't see the ceiling in the limited light. After killing the several skeletal warriors, vampires and other undead in the area, I began to explore, and in the rooms near the two staircases in the large room I found two wheels...both of which I easily turned. I almost fell for a most ingenious trap on one of the staircases when a large block quickly came out behind a tapestry, almost pushing me off to a certain death. Luckily I was running, and was able to avoid it just in time.
Upon descending the stairs, I saw that the two wheels I turned opened the trapdoor at the bottom. On further investigation I found out that it also removed the block from the starting passage to reveal a door. I followed the right hand wall of the dungeon's corridors for what seemed like hours and discovered a curious red brick wall. I touched it and was transported to another location. After searching around this new area for a little while I discovered another red door suspended in a room and touched that one as well.
After killing an ancient vampire in this room I was teleported to, I opened a door to find I was in a very large room. I once again followed the right hand wall, entering the first door I came to in this room. I soon arrived at some sort of maze constructed in tan-colored brick. I eradicated several wraiths inhabiting the maze and continued following the right hand wall. Eventually I came to a four way intersection with two downward-sloping passages. I took the right hand one and followed it as far down as I could.
At the bottom of the sloping passage I once again continued to follow the right hand wall and came to a room with a door. Three walls in this room looked like they could be moved, but how? I exited the room and quickly came upon 4 levers pointing in each of the cardinal directions. After some experimentation I realized that they moved the walls in previous room. After randomly pulling some (and discovering an ancient vampire in the process) I discovered the correct combination to pull was only the ones facing east and west, where the Direnni banners were.
Following the now-open passage, I killed some nasty liches and soon came upon a comfortable looking room with a beautiful woman standing in one corner...Medora!
- Greetings Kral. I am Medora
- Direnni, former sorceress to the court of
- Daggerfall. I have an interest in helping
- you in your aim to exorcise the spirit of
- King Lysandus, but I can do little in my
- present circumstances. If you would pay a
- visit to a certain other sorceress, I
- can lift the curse on Direnni Tower. Will
- you do this for me, Kral?
Always eager to help a damsel in distress (and a good looking one at that), I accept without hesitation.
- I will be in your debt, Kral.
- Nulfaga, the mother of my former
- Lord Lysandus is a renowned mystic,
- but I have heard whispers that the
- loss of her son has turned her mad
- with grief. If this is not true,
- she can and will help me. I need
- a certain rare item, the horn of
- a Great Unicorn to break the curse
- on Direnni Tower. If Nulfaga is
- indeed mad, you much search her
- castle for this horn yourself
- and bring it back to me. I will
- expect you back in (around 100) days.
Hmm...things aren't going to be as easy as they seem. Fortunately I was familiar with Shedungent, having completed the Concern for Nulfaga quest for Queen Aubk-i of Daggerfall. Still, Shedungent is a large place by any definition and it could take weeks to find the horn. With my large ship waiting in Isle's harbor I made quick time across the strait and on my long journey through the Wrothgarian Mountains to Shedungent.
After finally making it to Nulfaga's home and finding it looking pretty much the same as last time I decided to pay a visit to Nulfaga. As I suspected she was still quite mad and didn't provide me with any information about the location of the horn. I searched for hours and hours on end without finding anything. I came upon a long upwards sloping passages that ended in an apparently solid wall. I considered this rather suspicious and conducted a more thorough search at the beginning of the passage. As soon as I touched a torch near the base of the passage it started to move and I heard a rumbling sound. Sure enough, the wall at the end of the passage had disappeared.
I took the left route at the top of the now cleared tunnel and found myself in a small room. On the bed was lying a large unicorn's horn...finally I had the object which would free Medora! I took it and examined it.
- The delicate, spiraled horn curves
- slightly before ending in a deadly,
- sharp point. You had always heard
- that unicorn horns were of purest
- alabaster ivory. This one seems to
- be more like silver.
Once the horn was stowed safely in my pack I quickly exited Shedugent with a Recall spell and hurried back to the Isle of Balfiera and Medora. Having found Medora once it was easy to retrace my steps and find her again.
- You have succeeded in a most dangerous
- enterprise, Kral, but many
- more such trials await you. By bringing
- the horn to me, you have helped me lift
- the curse the Queen Dowager placed on my
- tower. I hope I can count on you for
- further aid. For now, take this
- (magicitem) as your reward.
All right...another magic item and the favor of a member of royalty! Surely both of them will come in handy in the future.
[edit] Finding Medora
After you entered the Direnni Tower, head through the door to the left and enter the tall room. Two skeleton warriors will attack you immediately, so take care of them first. There are two routes you can choose to reach Medora. The differ only at the beginning, the rest of the way however is identical for both routes.
[edit] Route 1
Go down the stairs and dispose the two vampires you will encounter on the floor. Go up the other stairway and turn the handwheel, there is a vampire in the room next to the handwheel as well as a treasure pile. Return back to the entrance and the large stone, which previously blocked the passage, has moved.
Follow the passage and go through the door. Head north and you will encounter a vampire ancient. Dispose of him and enter the room. In the room you will find a red brick teleporter, walk through this teleporter and you will be teleported to a room flooded with water.
There will be a random water monster in he room, kill it, go through the door and up the spiral staircase.
Go through the door and dispose of the vampire in the room. You will see another red brick teleporter, but this time you must click on it with the cursor to activate it. You will be teleported to a room with a trap door and a vampire ancient.
Take care of him and leave the room through the south door. You will find yourself in a huge chamber with a hollow truncated pyramid filled with water and water monsters.
[edit] Route 2
Walk down the staircase until you reach the bottom and dispose of the two vampires. Hurry up the other staircase.
Once you reached the top of the staircase dispose of the two wraiths you will encounter and open the locked door either with magic, lockpicking or your weapon. In this room you will find a handwheel located above the fireplace, turn it and it will open the trapdoor located at the bottom of the tall room.
Walk down to the bottom of the tall room and jump down the now open trapdoor. Kill the lich and the imp you will encounter at the bottom. Go through the west door and follow the hallway a few steps. There is a secret door located at the south wall of this hallway, open it and enter the room. Leave the room through the east door and enter the hallway.
Follow th hallway south until you come to an intersection.
Go east a few steps and head south, past a staircase leading up and you will come to another intersection. Head west through the hallway and through the door at the end. You will find yourself in a huge chamber with a hollow truncated pyramid filled with water and water monsters.
[edit] Further Route
Once you are in the room with the hollow truncated pyramid, find the chain hanging at the edge of the pyramid's opening. Click it and it will cast a levitation spell on you, alternatively you can use a levitation spell of your own. If you don't want to levitate to the second level, there is a cliffy staircase behind the west door of the huge room, which will also lead to the level above you.
Once you are levitating float up to the platform above you. A vampire will be waiting right in front of the platform, destroy it. There will be some treasure piles lying around on the ledges on this level, so collect them as long as the levitation spell is working. From the platform head north and up the west staircase. Head south and destroy the vampire you will encounter at the first intersection. Follow the hallway south until you reach a second intersection and a door to the west, go through the door.
Follow the hallway west, you will be attacked by some wraiths along the way, take care of them. Follow the hallway until you come to an intersection, head north a few steps, past an intersection and turn west at the second intersection. There are two downward-sloping passages, you can follow any of them, in each case you will encounter a vampire.
Once you arrive at the bottom, walk east and dispose of the ghost you encounter. In this passage you will find numerous levers, pull the two levers, that are opposite a Direnni Banner. Once you have pulled these two levers, head south the hallway and through the door.
Follow the open passage, you will hear the moans of some vampire ancients, but since the walls are blocking the passages, they can not harm you. Go through the door at the end of the unblocked passage and up the stairs. Destroy both wraiths you will encounter on your way up.
Follow the stairway further upwards and you will finally reach Medora Direnni's chamber. There is a lich guarding the entrance door, kill him and enter the chamber. At last you have found Medora Direnni. Remember this route well, because you have to come this way some more times.
[edit] Finding the Unicorn's Horn
You now have to return to Shedungent in the Wrothgarian Mountains to find the unicorn's horn. If you completed the Concern for Nulfaga quest you will know the command word to open the magically locked door which will make your search for the horn much quicker, or if you have access to a powerful open spell. Otherwise, get ready for another dungeon romp.
Once you entered Shedungent, walk a few steps to the north and click the Daggerfall Banner beside the magical locked door. Type in shut up and the door to the throne room will open. Head north and take care of the two monsters you will encounter. Leave the throne room through the north door.
Head further north until the hallway ends then head west up the ramp and past an intersection. When you stand in front of the door head north.
Follow the hallway further north until the textures of the environment change. Follow the hallway until you come to an intersection. Head south and up the ramp.
Walk through the hallway until you come to an intersection and a monster. Kill the monster and walk up the ramp leading south.
Follow the way, past an intersection and kill the monster near a second intersection. On the wall shortly before the second intersection, there is a torch. Pull it and it will grant you access to a way leading west. Follow this way up to yet another intersection and a monster. Kill it and head north. Follow this way a few steps and you will enter a room occupied by another monster. Kill the monster and look for a secret door on the southeast wall of this room. Open it and you will find the unicorn's horn lying just in front of you on a bed. Pick it up and take it to Medora Direnni, who is waiting for your return.
[edit] Enemies
- Various undead monsters within the Direnni Tower including numerous Vampire Ancients and at least one Lich
- Sorcerers and Battlemages within Castle Shedungent; Atronachs and Zombies at lower levels, Daedroths and Lichs at higher levels
[edit] Note
- Theoretically you can start this quest as soon as you reach level 8, assuming you have no negative reputation with Medora; it is not necessary to do Lhotun's quest first. However, you must know the location of the Direnni Tower, which is revealed to you either by completing Lhotun's quest or by completing the quest Former Student Part II.
