Infamy Dialogue
When I had a Thief with a lot of infamy and murders/assualts, I was used to guards telling me I was a "Murdering bastard, you better keep your blade sheathed". However, my Mage with three murders, eleven assualts, NO infamy, and 134 fame just started getting the same message. I think people say that to you once you have killed a certain number of poeple, regardless if it was a murder or not. I reached the 350 poeple killed mark when they started saying that to me. Which makes me think a lot of negative/positive things people say to you at the start of a conversation have little to do with Fame or Infamy.--ChristensenCT 18:09, 28 May 2006 (EDT)
:Yeah, a lot of the things people will say to you depends on your mastery in certain skills. For example, when your skill level in Athletics reaches 70 or higher, people will start saying: "You're a fit one. Been running a lot?". It seems likely that something similar would be based on kills, etc --<b>justthisguy</b><span style="color: Black">Talk</span> 09:21, 15 January 2007 (EST)
::Several of the guard greetings depend upon player statistics:
:::"You. I've seen your kind before. You've got blood on your hands. Keep your blade sheathed, you murdering bastard, or I'll put you down myself." If your character is a murderer (using the same definition used for entry into the Dark Brotherhood, so presumably even one murder would count)
:::"Bet you think you're somethin' huh? You call yourself a citizen of the Empire? No respect for order, no respect for law. You make me sick." If your character's infamy is >= 50
:::"Ah, it's good to see you, citizen! Oh yes, I know who you are. You've become something of a legend in these parts!" If your character's fame is >=50
:Ok so I think the murdering bastered line is only triggered if you kill someone recently because I have a infamy of 142 and my fame is 33 and ive only heard that line once and that was right after I killed a guard (It was indoors so no bounty). Burlin
Kinda' funny, I get the "Mudering bastard" line and the "Ah it's good to see you". I have like 2 murders (None being cold blooded) 2 infamy and 96fame rofl. 82.182.205.89
:What's the chance of this special line being used, as opposed to normal conversation? I've never heard it, though surely I qualify. Erathoniel
::The exact chance depends on a range of factors such as disposition, but it's very roughly 1 in 100. I've only heard it once or twice in hundreds of hours of gameplay. –Rpeh•T•C•E• 04:18, 1 June 2008 (EDT)
:::I'm not sure if it affects others, but in all 6 of my past characters, and my current one, Battlemages seem to be extra-sensitive to the 'Murdering Bastard' line. Even when their disposition was 100, I still received the message about 1 in 5 times.
:::: I think you get that line when you do the mission in anvil where you have to kill the female mage who has been killing merchants. When I fought her, a guard was nearby, and even though she attacked my friends AND the guard, he considered it a murder. That was my one and only murder. The battlemages said the murdering bastard line to me alot.
Bounty
It says getting caught murdering someone gives you a bounty of 240 septims, that goes up if you do anything else. When I murder someone, I always get a bounty of 1000 septims, even if I do surrender to the guards.T0mm0 15:16, 7 November 2006 (EST)
:I am pretty sure that the Official strategy guide says it is 1000 septims as well... I am sure that you automatically get 1000 septims.Drake3555 22:24, 3 June 2008 (EDT)
100 Infamy ....glitch?
Playing on the 360.

I have 100 infamy, and I'm not sure where it came from, or rather I think it "came" from the Grey Cowl, but not sure why it didn’t disappear with the bounty, which did go away.

It's a little complicated, but here's what I "THINK" happened.

I have been using the "nice" home in Skingrad as a base of operations, mostly because of the weapons shop next door, and well, lets face it, it's the pimpest palace, complete with display cases. (note: I chose this as base before downloading the upgrades, i.e. The wizards tower, et al).

Anyway on one of my many trips back to town with my pockets full of loot. You know the drill...load up as much as you can carry via as many enchantments(items) and spells as you can hold, and then head back to base, usually after a shutting down a gate, or raiding a ruin, etc.

Well no sooner did I appear back in town (Skingrad) when the guard wanted to know why I thought I should be allowed to stroll into town wearing the grey cowl, with my pockets bulging with ill-gotten booty.

D'OOOH!

OK so I forgot to take off the cowl (which severely limits the load), and immediately reloaded the autosave, then tried again.
Luckily the game autosaves when you fast travel, so I retried, and now when I appeared AFTER taking OFF the cowl, he still kept seeing me with it on.

I don't know why but after about 20 attempts, and various different ways of doing it, I did manage to get past this annoyance. Or so I thought.

Also note, I had been deliberately leaving the grey cowl ON until just before I appeared in town, and then hitting my "B" button just as I "materialized" in front of the guards and then removing it, before "fully" materializing. This seemed to work about 9/10 times, so it was not so bad, for the one out of 10 I would have to reload and try again, which would always work eventually.

Well it "seemed" to me I caught the guards right at shift change, and for whatever reason there was an extra guard at the gate, and try as I might, even if I DID manage to remove the cowl before materializing, he would arrest me on the spot.

Of course I did NOT accept the "pay fine" option. I had well over $20k worth of goods on me, having just closed an oblivion gate.

I am pretty sure I tried to resist arrest, and possibly this is how I got out of it, tried to "elude capture long enough to get the bounty removed (I may be mistaken, it was a while back), or I may have just managed to get the cowl off before he could spot me. I'm pretty sure it was the second option. Correct me if I am wrong, but if I paid the bounty, doesn’t the infamy go as well? (maybe that’s what I'm missing here?).

There is a brief moment when using fast travel with the grey cowl, where the gaurd will see you, but if you get it off in time, he will just come running up and talk to you, but not about being the grey fox, he will just kind of give you the hairy eyeball, if you know what I mean. I have experienced that a few times with the cowl on. It's like he sees you but by the time he gets to you, you remove it and he’s standing there like an idiot with not much to say, except "nice weather we're having", or some such nonsense, if he says anything at all.

Also because I usually fast travel back to the north gate of Skingrad, there is always at least one guard standing right there, so the odd time when I materialize, he wants to say something to me, and once in a while he even does, but most of the time he is either giving me the hairy eyeball (the view changes quickly, so it is facing him, like he wants to say something, but he doesn't) or he doesn’t even notice me.

Well this time it seems to have caught up with me, something to do with the fact I materialized (from fast travel) right in front of the guards, and also I am pretty certain there was an extra guard there, most likely due to a shift change going on.

I wish I could recall if I fled or just kept trying. It seemed to me at the time, I was just so happy to not get arrested on the spot when I appeared, that I didn’t notice my infamy had gone to 100.

I AM certain even if I took off the cowl as I was materializing, he still thought I was the grey fox, even though when I checked I did NOT have the cowl on.

Anyways, to make a long story short, somehow or another I got rid of the bounty, but the 100 infamy stayed, and I didn’t notice the infamy until a little while past it, and now I am several game hours past this point and from everything I have been reading on the net, I am stuck with this predicament (all in all not so bad, just annoying as heck).

Of course now I NEVER travel back to town with the cowl on, and have since made an enchanted helmet which when coupled with a custom feather spell, comes close to allowing me to carry the same load back to towns.

Just wanted to make you aware, so you do not run into the same "glitch". It REALLY seems like a legitimate glitch to me, at least. Your mileage may vary.

Sorry it's a little long, just trying to be as clear as possible, about what happened. (What I can remember, at least).

Short version: (playing on xbox 360)
------------------------------------
1) Wearing the Grey Cowl.
2) Fast travel back to town.
3) Materialized in front of guard(s)(North gate of Skingrad).
4) FORGOT to take off the cowl before the guard saw me.
5) Reloaded the autosave, and kept trying but now, even if I removed the cowl, he kept seeing me with it on.
6) Shift change for the guards, so there was an extra one there (or he was just making the rounds, and by coincidence was right where I appeared).
7) Removed the cowl, as I was materializing (Hit the "B" button, split second before the screen finished loading).
8) The guard STILL saw me as the grey fox (still saw the cowl), even though I checked(and re-checked) and I was NOT wearing the grey cowl.
9) Kept trying and eventually, managed to appear sort of 1/2 and 1/2, where they did not see me as the fox, so did not try to arrest me, BUT it did give me the infamy of 100!
10) Didn’t notice the infamy rank right away, since I was so happy to finally NOT get arrested on the spot, and now I am too far past this point to go back.
------------------------------------

Beware the grey cowl when using with fast travel!

Also anyone with any ideas or experience with what happened to me is welcome to add their insights.

Cheers!,
:Long question - short answer: No, Infamy does not go away, nor does fame. They both only increase, never decrease. Bounty is another matter, of course. --TheRealLurlock Talk 23:32, 6 February 2007 (EST)
murder gives infamy?
well i discovered a way to murder guards without bounty, that is to murder them in their sleeping quarters (this doesnt work for all sleeping quarters but it works in the imperial city). ive murdered over 1100 without bounty up to now, and im filled with money (also my character is godly), so ive decided to murder guards on the streets. i didnt realise every murder gives me one infamy so i kept going until i was at 100 at which point the guards say 'stop criminal, ive heard of you, your criminal exploits are well known. pay the fine, or server your sentence, your stolen goods are forfeit'.
since murder is a limitless way to earn you infamy, is there a limitless way to earn u fame? my infamy is at 105 currently and fame at 116, if my infamy is higher than fame i cant go to church to retore my dammaged attributes, so please help
:Murdering someone and being seen gives you bounty of 240 septims and no Infamy, but only if you hide your weapon and surrender to a guard. If you run around with weapon drawn and are attacked by another person your bounty will increase to 1,040 and you'll gain one Infamy point (tested with Vampire Hunters during Information at a Price quest from Mages Guild). If nobody saw you commit a murder (including your victim), you won't gain any bounty or Infamy.
I've deleted this comment because it really needs some confirmation. First, testing infamy/murder on quest targets, such as the vampire hunters, seems very unlikely to be relevant to the more general case of murdering an innocent townsperson. Second, if it is possible to get away with reduced bounty and infamy, I'd guess there are factors coming into play that aren't even considered here, such as the responsibility of the witness(es). Being subsequently attacked seems very unlikely to change the penalty for the original crime (the game wouldn't keep track of crimes that had occurred in the last five minutes and retroactively go back and change your penalty for those crimes). Finally, I can't figure out where an initial bounty of 240 septims would even come from. The information really seems to need confirmation and/or a better explanation. --NepheleTalk 01:23, 2 February 2008 (EST)
When patrolling the recent edits, I found the change from 1000 to 500 to trigger a guard to come after you. I didn't want to change it, as the specific requirements are a little unclear. If I'm reading the Construction Set correctly, if you have a bounty and it's 1000 gold or less, then there's a 20% chance that a guard will come after you, and over 1000 will cause them to attack on sight, I think. Can someone else have a peek and see if they agree? There's a lot of factors that play into this in the CS. == Fact Changes to Article ==

In trying to make sense of the article, I've made the following factual changes based on what I could see in the Construction Set and on the wiki quest pages. However, it would be useful if other editors could confirm these facts, since I can't take the time right now to fully verify everything:
* There are two infamy points given for each "standard" Thieves Guild quest, not 2
* There are no infamy points given by Independent Thievery (not one for each advance)
* I started by assuming that the math for the Thieves Guild total infamy (in the note following the table) was correct, but in fact none of the numbers added up. I've tried to undo the mistakes I introduced by falsely assuming the note was correct, and I've then tried to recalculate it all. However, I've gone in circles so many times with it that I don't trust anything I've done.
* I'm counting 18 "other" DB quests, not 17 (which agrees with previous math)
--NepheleTalk 17:29, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Advancing in the thieves guild gives no infamy? Ive heard people say it was but i never really checked when I advanced... ill research on it some more.
This is a very confusing subject though, considering how many possibilities their are.

Ok I have solved it. Nephele Read This
Well, I think most of the beginner quests were meant to only be +1 Infamy
And they you really were suppose to get +1 Infamy from advancement.

But the thing is. All but 3 Thieves Guild quests give advancements

Funny isnt it?
Savillas Stone, Boots of Springheel Jak, and Lost Histories

So, Basically. Up until the very last ones, everything was an advancements

Which if it did boost up 1 infamy

itd be, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1
Now does that any sense to the game play?

You do all these quests for 2 infamy and then out of a blue a few quests pop up and they are 1s?
I think on the developpers part, they removed the whole "+1 Infamy for advancements" and just changed all of them to 2s.

And i think this isnt so for the dark brotherhood because of its secretivity, how would anyone but a DB Member know all the ranks of the members?
So thats what I am thinking

Any Collaboration?
For example, the relics will not equip when the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal is equipped." And I'm sure I saw the same phrase on some other page. I'm confused, I can't remember any other items that would give this effect. May be the Beating Heart, as stated above... But eating a heart is an action, not an item, after all. How can I kill Henetir to get an infamy? Also, Paranoia is not on the list for infamy quests. Assuming the player gets caught for the three murders, thats a total of 3 infamy. ==max speed and athletics are not 255==

Since this website has been a major help for me, I would like to contribute something. Running speed is actually limitless, not 255 as indicated under the Athletic and Speed page.

First, in the console command, enter "tdt" then "sdt 6" it will display your character's walk and run speed.
Second, you need make 3 spells with "Fortify 100 Magicka" and "Fortify 100 Intelligence." Doing so will with increase your overall magicka by 850+ points. Yes, they do stack. (At least for my game)
Third thing you need is 100 points of Spell Absorption and a good Telekinesis spell. The purpose of this is to restore your magicka after you fortified it. You can alternatively use potions of sorcery or custom potions, but I don't recommend it.
Fourth, make some "Fortify 100 Speed" and "Fortify 100 Athletics" spells. Note that you have to be vampire to create "Fortify Athletics." Be sure to create a spell before curing your vampirism to keep the ability to create more Fortify Skill spells.
Fifth, LV100 Restoration obviously and at least LV75 Mysticism.

Steps: 1. Increase your overall magicka by casting your Fortify Magicka + Fortify Intelligence spells. 2. Restore magicka with Telekinesis or potions. 3. Cast Fortify 100 Speed and Fortify Athletics. 4. Repeat step 2 and 3.
Whenever I walk in Leyawin Castle some danger music starts playing up, and everyone starts bringing out swords and starts going aggressive. This is annoying as I can't talk to the count or Mazoga the Orc as their busy fighting this invisible danger. I've searched the whole castle and I haven't found anything evil in there. I have ELDER SCROLLS IV OBLIVION - GAME OF THE YEAR EDITION with Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles, which I just installed yesterday. Does this special edition need a patch - and if so, which patch specifically does it need? I saw the patches mentioned on this Wiki, but I don't know what "vanilla Oblivion" means (I assumed it referred to the vanilla colored cover of the Game of the Year version, but then that wouldn't make sense because that version also comes with Shivering Isles, but this Wiki says to use EITHER vanilla Oblivion patch OR Shivering Isles patch. So I am totally confused. Can you PLEASE give me a direct link to the patch I need? Thank you!!!

: If you play Game of the Year Edition, then you do not need any patch, since you are already patched to version 1.20416. Charm your target if possible. Otherwise, bribing will still increase it by 1 point.

It isn't always a flat 2 points per rank gained. I was playing a new character through some of the fighter guild quests over the weekend. The first promotion in the guild only gave me 1 fame point, while the second promotion gave 2. I think that's due to an odd total of fame gained for all promotions. The fighers guild has more ranks than the thieves guild or dark brotherhood. I also think the variation in awards for closing gates is similar. It's probably a 1.3 or 1.5 per gate, but you can't get fractional fame awards, so they give you 1 here and 2 there.
"Guards will see you as a friend if your Fame is 100 points greater than your Infamy. For example, if your Infamy is 45, you must have 145 Fame. When you commit a crime, if the bounty is less than 1000, the guards will pay the bounty for you and let you walk away as if nothing happened."

Simply having 100 more fame points than infamy isn't necessarily enough to get guards to pay off your fines. You may still need to use speechcraft/charm spells to raise their disposition to 91+(which is what is required), which can be done without fame points provided you have high personality, speechcraft stats. --Sundaroct131088 07:42, 28 August 2007 (EDT)
:I just revamped the section pretty substantially, including deleting that comment completely. Not only is the effect tied to disposition rather than fame, but the rest of the facts are wrong. I was trying to list all Fame (and Infamy) points that can be earned in quests, but soon I've understood that the list would be too long. So I suggest integrating Fame points in quest trailers (or Infamy for TG and DB quests), with possible commentaries in it. Or full list is needed anyway?

Also there are some exceptions like
* "Through A Nightmare, Darkly" - you can earn 1 Fame or 1 Infamy point (if you kill Henantier in Dreamworld)
* "Allies for Bruma" - 1 Fame point for each aid and 1 for each Sigil Stone
and some more.

Any non-quest Sigil stone also gives a Fame point.Den

:I agree completely, and had been thinking the same thing myself. The fame/infamy points should really be included on the individual quest pages, especially details such as how your choices can affect the fame points; right now fame/infamy is hardly ever mentioned on the quest pages.
:Right now this page is almost so incomplete that it's useless, and as you say adding all the quests here would just give a really long table listing almost every quest and stating "you earn 1 point for finishing the quest". I think it would be more useful to start this page with a general statement like "most quests except the TG and DB quests earn you one fame point, exceptions are listed below". Then limit this page to the unusual cases, and the cases that aren't clearly related to a quest (gaining ranks, admission to arcane U, closing random gates, etc). And perhaps also include some summaries, such as how many fame points you earn in total for doing each of the "good" quest lines. --Nephele 01:31, 2 November 2006 (EST)
