In Symmachus' thirtieth year there was great rejoicing in Mournhold for a girl child was born to their lord and his lady. A queen, the people sang, a queen is born to us! For among the people of Mournhold, the birth of a female heir is a sure sign of peace and prosperity to come.
#Speak to Brynjolf about the leadership of the Guild.

Detailed Walkthrough
Return to the Thieves' Guild and show Brynjolf what you found at Riftweald Manor. He will explain the significance of your findings, and tell you to speak to Karliah.

When you speak to Karliah, she makes a reference to being at full strength before pursuing Mercer, and asks you and Brynjolf to meet her at the standing stone outside of Riften. Nearby is the entrance to the Nightingales' Cave. Proceed inside, but don't get too far ahead - Karliah tells you more about the Nightingales and their role.

Your first stop is the armor chamber. Activate the stone; the Nightingale Armor is placed in your inventory. You must don it before continuing. Follow Karliah further into the cave; side passages lead to sleeping quarters and living spaces. She will later remark that this was the Nightingales' base, and that she will return here once done with Mercer. Karliah is the only one who can operate the pull chain for the gate leading into the next area.

You are directed to stand on a specific platform. If you have a companion with you, their presence does not affect the outcome in any way. Karliah summons Nocturnal and asks to resume her role as a Nightingale as well as induct you and Brynjolf into their ranks. Nocturnal agrees. If asked, Karliah will explain the role of the Nightingales, and also how Mercer got into the vault without having the necessary keys. Brynjolf will address the issue of the leadership of the Thieves' Guild, saying that he and Karliah think you would be the right person for the job. If you have done all the theives guild additional jobs.

But you still have to find Mercer and stop him ...

Bugs
*If Brynjolf does not follow you, or continues to exit the halls after you are told to don the Nightingale armor, it is impossible to start the oath.
*Karliah may just walk away and disappear, not opening the gate. Stand on the side near the gate when Karliah is speaking, this causes her to walk towards the gate not away from it.
*Karliah can sometimes not meet you there making the quest impossible to finish

Solution: Karliah will sometimes go back to the Winterhold Inn where you have met to decrypt Gallus' journal. It's related to the bug in the quest Hard Answers where the stages will not update. To solve this problem simply redo the quest step by step. The quest will reactivate an has to be solved again. On the PC you can use the console and type 'setStage TG06 60' and go to the cellar in the Winterhold Inn and talk again to Enthir and Karliah. After this Karliah and Brynjolf will be at the entrance of the Nightingale Hall. (On the PC you can check if this is the problem by typing 'getStage TG06' in the console. If the Stage is smaller then 200 then this is the cause of Karliah's disappearance). For some users, stage 60 will not fix the quest bug as Karliah will remain unresponsive and continue to stand in the Inn's basement. A workaround for this is to enter 'setstage TG06 200' which complete the quest Hard Answers. Karliah will then begin her long trek to Nightingale Hall. Fast travel to the hall and then wait for 24 hours and she will show up.

Alternatively, on the PC, another way to remedy this problem is to use the console commands:
prid 00020545
(for Brynjolf) or
prid 00058F1A
(for Karliah), followed by the command
moveto player
. Use the latter command as many times as necessary to lead the selected NPC to the stones; you may need to activate the stone multiple times in order to get Brynjolf and/or Karliah to equip their Nightingale armors. You may still be required to use the command as you continue further down the halls. Do NOT use the
placeatme
commands unless either NPC has completely disappeared from the game (i.e. not stuck or lost), otherwise you will create a clone of the NPC which may cause undesirable results in-game.
Detailed Walkthrough
After becoming a Nightingale, speak to Brynjolf. You learn that he and Karliah decided that you should be the one to replace Mercer once you deal with him. After you accept, he tells you to meet them at Irkngthand to stop Mercer Frey from stealing the Eyes of the Falmer and escaping with the [[Skyrim:Skeleton Key|Skeleton Key of Nocturnal.
]]
There are some bandits camped outside Irkngthand, but they're okay to kill or sneak past. The entrance is at the very top of the ruins. Once inside, it is recommended you sneak everywhere because there are irises on the walls which will drop out Dwemer Sphere Guardians that you'll have to fight. After getting past the first rooms, you'll come to a room with several spinning flamethrower traps. Just follow in the same direction they're spinning, and you can make it through without being hurt. After that, you will come to a Dwemer lift to take you to the level where Karliah and Brynjolf wait.

Karliah and Brynjolf will follow you now. Karliah believes Mercer knows that you're following and plans to ambush you down here. Go through the door and continue down the hall. You will see a scene of Mercer sneak attacking a Falmer, but you're unable to get to him. To open the door in the next room, you have to activate the levers on either side of the room overlooking the camp - these levers activate gears to either side of the gate, so you must reach the second lever before the gears activated by the first stop turning.

Brynjolf will tell you that you have a choice between sneaking or fighting, but both he and Karliah will react to sounds from Falmer. (Brynjolf even triggered the Dwemer Centurion standing guard in one area.) Both of them are essential and cannot be killed, but the hazards can reduce them to non-fighting status and leave you facing a pack of angry Falmer. Shoot the Dwemer Centurion with an arrow while still standing on the steps, the Falmer will fight and destroy him.

In the sanctuary, you'll see a short scene of Mercer prying out the eyes of the Falmer statue. Mercer will then collapse the ledge you're standing on, and after a short conversation, you will have to fight him. During the fight, he will mind control Brynjolf which will keep Brynjolf and Karliah out of the fight. Mercer will turn invisible occasionally during the fight. (Position yourself on the stairs and let Mercer come to you; for whatever reasons, he doesn't sneak up behind you.) (Tip: one easy way to end the battle quickly and effortlessly is to climb up to the ledge behind the statue. When Mercer comes to you, use Unrelenting Force to blow him off the ledge, a fall from this height will kill him instantly) Once Mercer dies, a pipe at the top of the room will burst, flooding the room. Take the Skeleton Key and the Eyes from Mercer's body, and wait for the water to rise. Once it gets high enough, a hole will appear in the roof above the statue's head. Be sure to talk to Karliah first before exiting as a glitch can occur and both Karliah and Brynjolf will be stuck underwater. At this point you will not be able to talk to her, essentially breaking the quest. After this run out the short passage to escape.

Talk to Karliah to complete the quest, and she will give you her bow.
#Proceed further into the cave and follow Karliah's instructions.

If you have done all the Thieves' Guild additional jobs.

Karliah is a female Dark Elf exile of the Thieves Guild and has spent the last twenty-five years on the run for the assumed murder of the former Guildmaster, her lover, Gallus. She will become a quest giver to the Dragonborn, and later companion, after advancing in the Thieves' Guild questline.

She is the only Dunmer in the game with purple, instead of the standard Dark Elf red, eyes. This, combined with her light brown hair (at present only viewable through console commands) has led to speculation that she might be only part Dark Elf.
Detailed Walkthrough
A Thief Among Thieves
Head to the Ragged Flagon through The Ratway. Meet Karliah after entering through the door to the Ragged Flaggon and follow her as she leads you to the Ragged Flagon-Cistern where Brynjolf is waiting to confront you both. Follow them as they head to the vault then talk to Brynjolf. Tell him everything and he'll instruct you to break into Mercer's home and look for clues. You have a couple options here. Either fight Vald, sneak past him, or the nonviolent optional way to deal with Vald: Paying the Debt. If you want a nonviolent way to deal with Vald but don't want to pay the debt, you can sneak to the back of the house and shoot the ramp contraption, Vald will become hostile and chase after you. Lead him to a guard and they will kill Vald. Loot his body and take the key.

Paying the Debt
First, talk to Vex in the Ragged Flaggon and learn about her debt to Maven Black-Briar. Then head up to the city and locate her. Check at the The Bee and Barb first. She'll agree to forgive his debt if you locate the Quill of Gemination at the bottom of Lake Honrich outside of Riften.

From the Riften Stables, head south west till you get to the edge of the lake. Ahead, you should see a large ship docked at Riften. Swim towards the west most end of that ship and look west across the lake to Goldenglow Estate to a similar ship docked there. Halfway to the other boat the prow of Vald's sunk row boat can be found at the bottom of the lake. For reference, a small island on the north will mark the halfway point. You'll see half a boat prow sticking out of the ground and the quill is located in a strongbox with an level-dependant lock. Pick it, take the Quill and a leveled amount of gold, then head back to find Maven. She'll hand you a note: Vald's Debt to take to Vald at Riftweald Manor.

Head to the back gate of Riftweald Manor and wait at the back gate until he comes to talk to you. He'll give you a key to the house and open the back gate for you for releasing him from his debt.

A Plot Revealed
Get a good vantage of the mechanism under the ramp and fire an arrow. The ramp will crash down and you can now head up to the second floor and into the house.

The first room is unguarded. The next, has a single guard who should be stuck facing the west wall so you can sneak past easily. The stairs down are on the north west. At the bottom, another guard will be patrolling.

When you reach the bottom of the stairs, immediately face east and there will be closed doors. Head through them. On the north east kitty corner to the bared front door, you'll see a Suspicious Cabinet. Open it, then open the false back panel. Inside is a stairway down into the cellar and enter the tunnel system.

After avoiding the pressure plate by the metal gate you see when you first start out in the tunnels, make a left and head south which leads to a trap room of circles on the ground. Looking at the tiles, head south 2 squares, west 2 squares, north 2 squares, west 2 squares, then finally south 2 squares.

The hallway after the trap room has a pressure plate trap right around the corner which will launch a series of darts in front of the plate. After this trap, on the right is a chest which was on the other side of the metal gate at the beginning.

Following along the hallway further, you come to the hallway of timed pendulum blades and battering rams. Sprinting is always good here. Once at the other end, head down the ramp and stop at the closed door. There is a dart trap trigger on the left side of the door. On the other side of the door are Mercer's plans, a note: Many Thanks, a copy of Red Kitchen Reader, Chillrend in a case, Amulet of Stendarr, and a few less important items. On the desk is a statue "Bust of the Gray Fox", which can be sold to Delvin for 600 gold. Continue along the path till you reach the entrance to the Ratway Vaults.

Fall down the hole and you are a right turn away from the Ragged Flagon. Return to Brynjolf and hand over the plans. Quest completed, now on to the next quest: Trinity Restored.

Detailed Walkthrough
First go speak with Enthir at "The Frozen Hearth" in Winterhold. Note there is a bug that dictates you cannot talk to Enthir if you have started, but not completed the quest The Staff of Magnus, as Enthir believes Winterhold to be in danger and will continually repeat "This is going to be terrible for business". After talking to Enthir, go speak to the wizard, Calcelmo, at Understone Keep in Markarth. He won't give you what your looking for so you will have to steal it. From here you have several options:

*You can go straight to the museum if you wish to pick the lock.
**Using this method causes the guards in the museum to be hostile, and as they are city guards you will incur a bounty if you kill them.
*You can simply grab his key; which should be right next to him on the table.
**This option will also cause the guards to be hostile.
*If you ask to visit the archaeological site, you will be asked to kill Nimhe (a stronger frostbite spider). After you have done this task you will be given the key to the museum, and can walk past the city guards without sneaking.
*Solving Calcelmo's love problems during a Temple of Mara quest will add additional dialog where he will hand over the key to the museum, and allow you passage (the guard at the door will still tell you you can't enter, but the guards inside won't bother you).

Continue past the guards and enter the lab. The guards here will be hostile regardless of the method you chose to enter the museum, but they are Calcelmo's personal guards and therefore will not give you a bounty. It is, however, possible to sneak past them anyway, if you desire to do so. If you don't, employing the various traps around the lab using pull levers and valves will make this section far easier. The shortest route to Calcelmo's quarters is barred from the other side, so you have to go through the lab, out onto the Wizard's Balcony (just before the door to exit to the balcony you can find a Dwemer puzzle cube to sell to Delvin), and up the stairs to the right into Calcelmo's Tower. Move down a short hall, turn left, and go up the stairs to a room which contains charcoal and rolls of paper, which you will need to copy the Guide; a massive stone tablet that cannot be moved. After copying the text; two guards, the city captain, and Calcemo's nephew enter to hunt you down. You may fight them if you wish, but if you have high sneak you can simply sneak past them after they split up (distracting the remaining guard by killing Calcelmo's nephew with an arrow is a good way to go). Note that if you choose to fight them, Calcelmo's nephew may reanimate the slain guards, so be sure to take him out first. If you feel you like running, you can simply dash forward and exit back to the Wizards Balcony. A waypoint will indicate an exit route: hugging the right edge of the balcony will lead you into a small hole to the waterfall. If you carefully fall into the waterfall you will take no damage, and then you can just fast travel to Winterhold. (By using the Ethereal shout, you can become invulnerable for 20 seconds or more.) You can always proceed back through the museum - avoiding any guards you didn't kill earlier.

Return to Winterhold, where Karliah and Enthir are waiting in the basement of the Frozen Hearth. Speak to each of them; Karliah will tell you that Gallus, Mercer, and she were the Nightingales - a secret faction of the Thieves' Guild sworn to protect the Shrine of Nocturnal.

Return to Riften and head to the Thieves' Guild through the Ratway. The graveyard entrance will be inaccessible until the end of the quest. Meet with Karliah, then enter the Ragged Flagon Cistern to speak with Brynjolf. Karliah shows Gallus' journal to Brynjolf, and he checks the vault to find it empty. Karliah presents you with the Nightingale Blade; Brynjolf briefs you on your next task.

Guild Trinket
The trinket in this quest is the Dwemer Puzzle Cube. It can be found in the Calcelmo's Laboratory zone, in the room where Aicantar is reading. The Cube is on a table to the right, after going past Aicantar's table but before the door to the balcony.

Bugs
In Calcelmo's Lab there might be a buggy "markarth city guard" who gives you a bounty regardless of your standing towards Reach faction. All talk options except going to prison or fight fail. You won't be able to erase that bounty via console afterwards.
Workaround, if you play on PC: locate that guard, enter the console, click him and type "kill". Leave console. The other guards won't give you a bounty as described above.

Karliah is a female Dark Elf exile of the Thieves Guild and has spent the last twenty-five years on the run for the assumed murder of the former Guildmaster, her lover, Gallus.
