All the short quests in DB line (interludes like "Welcome to the Family", "Blood of the Damned" etc.) are not described, so why this one is? --Den 01:11, 31 October 2006 (EST)
Who Was It?
I've done this quest twice now with different characters, and I am yet to follow the plot of it. It was my original understanding that the purification was part of Ballimont's plan to destroy the DB; by claiming there is a traitor within it. But that doesn't sit right with Luciene's involvement. So is there some sort of clue or evidence as to who it actually is? Or am I just being really dumb and missing something very obvious? ;) 87.127.79.8

:It was Mathieu Bellamont. As I read it, various DB members have been getting killed and it's happening because of information only the Black Hand and the Cheydinhal Sanctuary dwellers possess. The BH consider themselves above suspicion so assume it's the sanctuary people - hence the Purification. Lucien is simply the speaker in charge of that particular sanctuary; doubtless Bellamont is trying to deflect blame onto somebody else. --RpehTalk 00:20, 2 October 2007 (EDT)

::Bellamont used to be a member of the Cheydinhal Sanctuary, he was promoted to Silencer and subsequently sent to serve another Speaker somewhere else. So while the taint of betrayal (and the blood trail that the Black Hand picked up on, apparently) did originate at Cheydinhal, the fact that you didn't get the traitor during the Purification is blamed solely on grievously poor timing.—Dark Spark 20:13, 4 January 2008 (EST)
Dark Minion
Bizarre Occurrence ~ Explanation Needed
When I did this quest, I decided to poison Gogron with a poisoned apple, putting it in his inventory after removing all other food and drink sources. I waited until he went to eat, but Ocheeva suddenly attacked him! Gogron retaliated, but eventually died. I suspected that Ocheeva may have killed Gogron for the apple, the only food source available, but she did not remove it from his inventory. Does anybody have any idea what happened? --Merco 08:02, 15 March 2008 (EDT)

: Not really, but when my character joined the DB and spoke to Ocheeva, once Telaendril and Gorgon had finished their conversation, Ocheeva and Telaendril started fighting. I think Ocheeva started it, which is odd given her aggression rating of 30. Mind you, my game is heavily modded, so something else may have modified her. Are you running any major mods, such as OOO? --Gaebrial 09:52, 17 March 2008 (EDT)

::I can't run any mods, as I have Oblivion on PS3. I was using the GOTY edition, though, so this may have affected the situation. --Merco 12:40, 17 March 2008 (EDT)

::: This also occurred in my game under similar circumstances. Once I began killing off members (I believe Antoinetta was first), i return to the main hall a few moments later and Ocheeva is attacking Gogron. Perhaps this is meant to suggest that Ocheeva suspects Gogron of the murder, perhaps due to a low disposition. In my version, Ocheeva is easily killed by Gogron. These little unexplained bits of the AI perhaps are meant to make the game feel more dynamic. 209.134.75.234

:::: I think it's because there is no other food. I gave Antoinetta a poison apple and Ocheeva attacked her. I took all of the food from the sanctuary earlier, so I believe that's what she was after.--gooden001 December 2009

::::: I had the same thing happen but my situation leads me to believe there may be suspicion of a purfication? Because when Ocheeva randomly attacted Gorgon there was no placing of an apple of taking of food on my part. I was just chilling waiting for a good time to cut him to ribbons when ocheeva just pounced on him. Gorgon was an easy kill after the fight but this is still very strange. - Jakeh56 12:19 13 Jan 2010. Jakeh56
Feeling Lonely?
Once you're finished with all the Dark Brotherhood quests, the sanctuary is pretty void and bare. A thing I like to do is, during this purification quest, kill one of the members, and then use the resurrect command to bring them back. This means they'll go about their daily business like nothing has happened, and will still technically count as dead. Sometimes when resurrected they will still be auto-aggressive towards you, so be sure to kill them properly the first time.
This also allows you to purchase Mraaj-Dar's stuff whenever you want. 121.44.75.12

:Ha Ha! I never would have thought of that. Perhaps you should add it to the notes section of the quest? --Ocylith 22:14, 17 April 2008 (EDT)

:: As much as I like the occasional plot twists, I'd prefer if there were alternatives to killing everyone. Making personal decisions (such as disobeying orders) and solving the mystery of the killer and perhaps sparing certain characters (as you may do for Scar-tail). The empty sanctuary doesnt feel quite the same. On a related note, anyone know if the Sanctuary containers are safe once the deed is done? 209.134.75.234

:::I only checked some of them, but looking at the Construction Set, it appears as though any of the containers that belong to someone (like Vincente's desk) will not respawn. The obvious method to check this out for yourself, since scripts and the like could concievably alter behaviour, is to empty everything out after the Sanctuary is yours, save the game, then just wait three days to see which ones respawn and which ones don't. You can re-load to avoid the 3-day skip, though it's almost never really a concern anyway. --Robin Hood (Talk • E-mail • Contribs) 12:36, 22 May 2008 (EDT)
Voranil, what a fighter!
Obscure... I was in the Cheydinhal Bridge Inn waiting for Telaendril to return to the sanctuary. Suddenly, after I waited a few hours, Telaendril gets into a fight with, as unlikely as it may sound, the pompous owner of Riverview, none other than Voranil. I just watched and waited until the were done fighting. Eventually, Voranil kills Telaendril with his bare fists! I must have underestimated him. Anyway, why did this happen? I'm not sure which one started the fight or whether this happened due to Telaendril becoming hostile torwards someone else and Voranil rushing to help that someone else.Nifhelton 18:54, 6 June 2008 (EDT)
: Telaendril was probably just another victim of Oblivion's AI system. She tried to steal something to eat (because she has low Responsibility) and Voranil turned hostile on her because he had a low disposition towards her. Best guess. == Bug Confirmation ==

I've moved this bug here from the article:
:*Ensure that you wait for the quest cue to appear before leaving the sanctuary, after having read the note from Lucien. If you don't, the quest will not update, Lucien will not appear at Fort Farragut and the Dark Brotherhood quest line cannot be completed.
I can't see anything in the scripting that would require you to be in the sanctuary after reading the note. Furthermore, I'm pretty sure that one of my characters didn't read the note until half-way to Fort Farragut. So it's not clear to me that this bug description is providing accurate information on what happened, nor accurate advice on how to avoid having a problem. I'm moving the whole thing here because a look at the scripts tells me it's not true. The trigger for giving the player ownership of Shadowmere is Lachance's line "From this moment forward, you will walk the shadows as my Silencer", which also advances the player to Silencer rank. The line that enables Shadowmere ("Now go, and may Sithis guide you in this new stage of your life's dark journey.") also sets stage 100 on the quest, completing it. Instead of using the Kill and Resurrect console commands so to advance in the quest without turning the Sanctuary into a barren and lifless place, (as the Kill and resurrect commands are still having a risk of the killed NPC being registered in the game's engine as -permanently- dead before you resurrect them, despite you was fast). == Who Was It? ==

== High-level recommendation ==

I started this quest at level 17+. Needless to say, the leveled slaughterfish were lethal. I was totally able to circumvent damage by Water-Walking in sneak (w/35% Cham. but I don't think it changed anything), and I was able to sneak-attack the fish. They stay close enough to the surface (normally) to be hit without having to dive.

I also experienced the flying-fish glitch which made two of the twelve fish appear to be suspended in midair by a fine cord which could be attacked. When the arrow was misplaced, I searched around the intermediate area of the quest (the section above the map text), and found my suspended fish after it appeared out of nowhere.
Markers
The markers for the fish are indeed not always correct, and it has nothing to do with delay, or not seeing the fish, or what have you. I, and others, have confirmed this independently. For the most part, the markers will be correct, but can be off be a significant amount as well. If you wish to debate the accuracy of this fact, let's do it here before reverting.

Just to provide more detail on this, in the case that happened to me today, I had killed the previous fish and taken the scales, and the marker had updated to the new fish, which was well away from the previous one, so there was no mistaking it. When I got there, there was no fish. I swam around, tried saving & re-loading, fast-travelling and coming back, most of which will usually work to force it to update the marker and/or the fish, if there was any discrepancy. I even tried TCL to see if the fish had fallen through the bottom of the map. This process took place over several minutes, and as I say, the marker had visibly updated after the previous fish, so there was no doubt in my mind that it was pointing to the next fish at this point. Eventually, I found the fish about three or four seconds of swimming away from where the marker was pointing. Noticeably, once it saw me and it started moving, the marker corrected itself to where the fish actually was.

My suspicion is that the marker is probably off once in a while for other people as well, but because they move, it self-corrects. Since the fish don't even animate (much less move) until they spot you, there's no self-correction going on. It's also possible that it has something to do with being underwater, though I've never had any problems with other underwater markers, so I think that's less likely. Whatever the problem is, though, it clearly IS a problem with the Rumare Slaughterfish in this quest. --Robin Hood 16:44, 13 October 2007 (EDT)
::It's the latest patch on the PC. In four times doing the quest, I've had one where it occured three or four times, two where everything was flawless, and this most recent time where only one fish was a problem. So obviously it's something that occurs intermittently, and not all that frequently, but I've seen it reported by others as well over the last year, and some were clearly not experiencing delay issues, so I know it's not just me. It's possible it's related to a certain setting, or something like that...who knows. Oh, and I *have* re-installed between one set of those games, so I know it's not a faulty install, and the first time it happened, I was "mod-free", so it's not a mod doing it, either. I think I win - I've tried tcl, hitting the two newest dead Rumare Slaughterfish with a series of weapons (dagger, longsword, claymore, arrow, fists), advancing the quest stage using the console, saving/reloading, sleeping, waiting, fast travelling, and Detect Life. Nothing. Anywhere. I made sure of that by using the clear-underwater-view glitch. Heck, I've even cleaned out all the clams in that portion of the lake.
I'm running the Unofficial Patch, but managed to work around the marker problem, although a bit indirectly. After killing a slaughterfish and noting that the marker did not move to the next one, I used the console to resurrect the fish I just killed, then killed it again and collected another Scales. At that point, the marker moved to the next fish. I had to do it one more time, but was able to collect all of the Scales. Marstinson 02:15, 19 March 2009 (EDT)
I've managed to find 6 of the fish on my own, but after scouring the entire lake with the highest detect life spell available, I have alot of crab meat but still only the 6 scales needed. ::It took me nearly 17 hours of real time (not in-game time) to complete this, and frankly it's not worth the effort. I've learned that I will not ever take this quest again with any other character, plus the following:
::* There is only ever one Rumare Slaughterfish in the entire lake. Swimming around hunting for it is like looking for a needle in a haystack because visibility is nil. There isn't a school of them that you are likely to "run into". Even with Detect Life, the odds are that the lone fish will be outside the range of the spell the vast majority of the time.
::* The map marker/compass pointer only ever points within a small area in the cove on the Weye side of the lake, northwest of the village between the wooden dock and the large rocks. However, the fish can actually appear anywhere from an imaginary line drawn due west across the lake from Dzonot Cave, to the narrows due west of the Hestra Rune Stone on City Isle. This area is about 15 times as large as the area where the map marker appears, and the fish is almost always in motion, especially if it detects your presence.
::* The fish does not spawn if it's raining. The game rolled rain for multiple in-game days, and I did not see a single fish between hour six (when the rain started) and hour 15 (when the rain stopped).
::* The wiki article on Rumare Slaughterfish does not mention it, but in addition to Greenspore the fish bite carries a chance of Disintegrate Armor. I received three bites from one fish and my freshly repaired cuirass was reduced to zero. If it doesn't have a chance of Disintegrate Armor, it's doing a darned convincing impression of it. == Duplicating scales in the enchanter's chest at the Arcane University ==

It should be possible to duplicate the scales in the Archmage's Enchanter's chest, because they are defined as ingredients, which is the only type of item the chest accepts. I really didn't feel like swimming for hours, searching for those damn fish, especially because the script seems to be buggy and the fish are not enabled (spawned) properly. I only found 4, after that, nada, was using a very powerful detect life spell, no fish, anywhere. So I wrote a little mod that allowed me to duplicate the scales at the Archmage's quarters. Here's what you need to change through the CS:

Item ->uncheck the "Quest item" box

Enchanter's chest script->add the scales item to the list of items to be duplicated. There are also some other minor errors in the script, check for errors

Fisherman dialog->remove the "Quest stage==90" condition

* These fish are very strong at higher levels, so you might need a lot of healing potions, especially if you have low endurance like a mage or thief.
* Any Rumare Slaughterfish in the western section of Lake Rumare will work (although not the regular Slaughterfish that are found elsewhere). It is possible to complete this quest without using the compass at all by just looking around the lake for fish. This is easiest with a Detect Life spell. It is even easier if you also can use a constant effect Water Walking enchantment to walk across the lake. Besides making it faster to search for the fish, you can then safely attack those that are near the surface without them attacking back.
* The Rumare Slaughterfish are leveled.
** Doing this quest at low levels means that the fish are the easiest to kill, and you receive the exact same reward as if you wait until later.
** If you leave this quest until you are high level (16+), the quest fish are possible kills for trapping Grand Souls.
* The Fin Gleam helmet can be helpful for this quest as it contains the enchantments Night Eye, Water Breathing and Detect Life (20ft).

I have the 360 version of this game and have experienced the glitch where the quest arrow gets stuck on the dead slaughterfish, but whenever I repeatly attack the dead fish corpse with a one-handed blade, it seems to correct the problem and the marker goes to the next fish. I don't know if it works with other weapons, but I suppose it would. Mystic 13:02, 4 September 2007 (EDT)Mystic
High-level recommendation

This is definetly the most problematic quest I've faced.---FromHereOn 17:57, 28 November 2007 (EST)
How do you get to quest state 110, and what is the amulet you get? --Robin Hood 14:55, 13 October 2007 (EDT)
: I don't believe it's possible; at least, I can't see how it would happen from the script. There is, however, something called the Jewel of the Rumare as a unique amulet, so it might have been in the quest at some point during development. You can use the console command <code>player.additem 000856EF 1</code> to add it to your inventory if you want to see it. --Rpeh•T•C•E• 02:40, 14 October 2007 (EDT)

If it happens again this time around (I just restarted from a fresh install due to technical issues), I'll save my game just so I can send it to people and prove it to them. :) --Robin Hood 02:59, 14 October 2007 (EDT)
:::::Okay, so I'm doing it this time, and for the first time (at least that I've noticed), the marker was off during combat, but not before it started. See Screen Shot 2 (notice the fish to the right of "my" right fist, but the green marker pointing towards Weye); Screen Shot 3 (yes, it really is a Rumare); and Screen Shot 4 (yes, that really is my active quest <g>).

Guess I have to spawn one and see what happens. 71.181.6.169

I am having the same problem on the 360 version, I have all the extra content available for download if that means anything, and the marker will not move no matter what I do. I've managed to find 6 of the fish on my own, but after scouring the entire lake with the highest detect life spell available, I have alot of crab meat but still only the 6 scales needed. Any workarounds? The duplication glitch doesn't work with these scales either, so I'm stuck. B10Reaper 23:00, 2 May 2009 (EDT)

# Find Aelwin pacing around his house and speak to him.

Detailed Walkthrough
Slaughterfish Problem
Aelwin Merowald can be found walking around his house in Weye after about 7 or 8 in the morning. Talk to him and go through his dialogue in order to receive a quest to kill twelve Rumare Slaughterfish. When talking to him, it is advisable to not select the option to laugh at him, since laughing will decrease his disposition towards you by 60 points and end the conversation. If you lower his disposition below 20, he will not even start a conversation with you; a Charm spell will be necessary to get his disposition over 20 and receive the quest.

Gone Fishing
Follow the green arrow on the compass and kill the fish. While the marker is normally accurate, it will sometimes be quite far off. If in doubt, look around or use life detection magic; sometimes you will have to swim away from the marked spot for several seconds in order to find the fish. It will also be much easier to find the fish during the day.

Once you've killed and looted the first fish, the marker should point to the next one (there might be a short delay). Continue this until you have 12 scales. You appear to have an unlimited amount of time and the fish don't move, so you can swim to the shore and rest if necessary. If the green marker arrows don't move on, try hitting the fish's floating corpse, or leaving and waiting for a few hours, then coming back.

Talk to Aelwin again and he will give you a unique ring called the Jewel of the Rumare that gives you constant effect Water Breathing and Fortify Athletics 4 points, a rather nice reward for such a simple task.

Retirement Savings
Aelwin mentions that the fish scales will be sold to an alchemist and the money made will contribute to his savings for his retirement. If you are the thieving type, select the Where are your savings? dialogue option. If you increase his disposition to at least 70, he'll mention that his savings are locked in a box in his house and he has the key. After Aelwin tells you this, you can pick his pocket for the key or kill him and take it. The chest is located to the left of the fireplace in his house, though there is only a small amount of gold in the chest. Note that the key will not appear in his inventory if you do not successfully ask him about his savings.

Notes
*The following two Journal discrepancies occur:
:* Although the quest journal says that the Weye settlement is southwest of the Imperial City, it is actually due west.
:* The quest journal states that Aelwin is getting too old, therefore you need to do the legwork for him. Aelwin however says the reason he can't get the scales is because a slaughterfish injured his leg.
* After you finish the quest, you can pickpocket Aelwin and take back the Rumare Slaughterfish Scales, but it's not advisable to do so as you can't sell them or remove them from your inventory, as they are still classed as quest items. They will also be stuck in your inventory if you happen to collect the scales, but Aelwin dies before you can hand them over.
** UOP
** Pc22 You can remove the Quest Item status of the scales yourself with the following command: <code>setquestobject 00185FE2 0</code>
* Aelwin is located very close to the wilderness, so he might wander off and feed the local wolves. If that happens, you will have to resurrect him using the console, using the command Resurrect 00185FE1, but on Xbox or PS3 you cannot complete the quest.
* The only way to get the Jewel of Rumare is if Aelwin hands it to you; the ring will not be on his corpse if you kill him.

Bugs
* There seems to be a problem for some users where one of the fish is stuck inside a rock in the pond. There is also a problem with the marker pointing at the location of the fish that has just been killed. There appears to be no direct fix to either problem using the console or otherwise. The <code>TCL</code> command via console shows no fish inside the rock and <code>movetoqt</code> places the player hovering a few feet above the water. Creating the scales in your inventory using the console doesn't make the quest continue.
** UOP
* Resurrecting a slaughterfish with the <code>resurrect</code> command and then killing it can be used to finish the quest if the player has already killed one fish but the next one is stuck or cannot be found.
* Alternatively, simply search the lake for other Rumare Slaughterfish (see next tip). Unfortunately, this can be a slow and frustrating business. However, it is possible to use the console to spawn new fish directly in front of you: <code>player.placeatme <formid></code>, where <code><formid></code> ranges from <code>00068825</code> through <code>00068829</code> (see Rumare Slaughterfish for details).
* These fish sometimes spawn above the water, above the rocks, and above the shorelines. It's best to save after every kill. If you run into a problem with the fish spawning like that and you are unable to attack them, first try an area of effect spell. This sometimes "knocks" the fish back into the water where you can attack it. Otherwise, you will have to reload to correct the Slaughterfish's location.
** UOP
** Not all instances of fish mis-spawns have been fixed in the Unofficial Oblivion Patch. For instance, the fish can spawn inside the tower that supports the bridge (the fish can be seen swimming inside the tower using a Detect Life spell).
* Some of the Rumare Slaughterfish spawns are not initially disabled properly which can lead to the quest incorrectly updating stages if the player picks up the scales from the corpses. This will then cause other stages to misfire, leading to the quest not enabling new targets when it should.
**UOPS
* Each time you ask Aelwin "Where are your savings?" a copy of his key is added to his inventory, meaning he can end up with several copies.
* Aelwin might not trust you enough to tell you where his savings are even after you have completed the quest, making the key never appear on his body, but his gold will be available by pickpocketing instead.
