Letting Cicero Live
I have no clue what happens if you let Cicero go. I will be going back, probably in a few days, and redoing all of the Dark Brotherhood quests in order to tie up all loose ends like this, but if someone beats me to it, by all means, go ahead and add it.
Troll in the Cave
On my experience, doing this quest at level 40, the Troll in the cave was no Ice Troll, but rather a named Troll named Udefrykte.
There's a page for it on the wiki, but it's not listed in the quest information. Being a newbie here, is this something i'm allowed to edit and provide a link to?
: Good question. Where would you want to link it to? I'm not sure that this troll is the Uderfrykte Matron as the article currently says. When I met it, it was called simply 'Uderfrykte.' As the Matron appeared in Oblivion, she had a found journal associated with her...didn't see anything this time. But it was good of you to include the information! --Irene Metrick 17:29, 25 November 2011 (UTC)
Fighting Back
Cicero is supposed to go down in one hit, isn't he? When I tried to kill him, he immediately jumped up and started fighting. However, the objective to kill him was reported as completed on the first hit. --Koden 06:33, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

Lucien's information
It's mentioned in the article that summoning Lucien Lachance adds the information that Sithis doesn't want Cicero killed. Would it be useful to add that the trigger for him saying this seems to be Cicero talking to you about 'sending the best to kill the best'? And also that you have to wait a bit for Lachance to finish saying Sithis doesn't want Cicero killed, that he doesn't say it all right away? Just a thought, as I had to reload a few times until I realized this myself and heard all of what Lachance has to say about it. Obax 03:06, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I don't know if this happens only to me, but when I read the book in the beginning of the quest nothing happens. I guess I'll have to advance the quest stage with setstage...
No Shadowmere
During the animation where Shadowmere appears, she can get stuck underneath the bubbles. I have had this happen to several characters on the consoles. I heard luring enemies near the bubbles during death incarnate will coax her from the bubbles, as will fast travel to all stables untill she appears for a split second, thus becoming untrapped and waiting at the pool.

My friends said this has half the time worked, has yet to work for me. Ive already gone about a week or so continuing the game and still only bubbles, no shadowmere 65.13.119.80
stealing ciceros items
i found it possible to steal all of ciceros belongings while he was lying on the floor.
but to make it clear, i had fully a developed sneaking tree & almost fully developed pickpocketing tree (missing out only on poisoning & keymaster here).
chance to steal his clothes was on some 38 percent, and stealing the hat on 17 percent. rest was all on 90 percent.
had to reload just once for stealing his hat in the end.

maybe worth changing the info on this bit on the page.

Cicero's hat and clothes CAN be pick-pocketed. (100%)
You need to be able to reverse pickpocket a paralyzing potion as with a trainer and stay far enough away so an invisibility spell makes you hidden. As the potion wears off run towards his feet and click him quickly and his hat and clothes will show up as 0% but are still swipable as is large cash amounts on trainers.

Not exactly ground-breaking but I did feel quite smug. :) The Source 00:24, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Some thoughts
Wouldn't the notes section benefit from splitting it up in one notes section and one bugs section?

Would the page benefit from a more detailed description of how the choice of letting Cicero live or die will affect the future gameplay?

Would it be appropiate to mention the queststage "666", "behold Shadowmere" as an easteregg with the connection between the number 666 and shadowmere's appearance in mind?

just thoughts.. and I guess other editors would do a better update to the page than me, as most of my editing gets "undone". 112.5.139.10 17:52, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

While trying the second entrance technique mentioned earlier, I tried to kill the dragon by bow-sniping instead of bruteforce melee and I think I found a bug. I used the first hut (furthest away from the wordwall with the chest right inside the door) for thu'um protection and to be able to get "hidden" status. Everything went fine until the dragon "landed" (bash down with force) just behind the hut. This made the player fly up to the roof and get stuck in the ceiling and depending on viewing angle, sometimes be able to see the outside through the roof. Starting the fight from the hut and then running out from it before the dragon bashed down behind it worked fine, but when the dragon was dead (I continue to use another hut as protection) and I went to the first hut (the buggy one) the player walked in the air around the hut and was not able to enter it anymore. The chest could still be looted from a distance outside the hut, but the crosshair had to be precise in one particuar spot.

I dont know if this is a bug or if it is an attempt from bethesda to make the first hut collapse as a shelter a bit into the fight. If so, they have failed to make it in a trustworthy and "nice" way. I have tried this 4 times from a savepoint just before enter the summit from the mountainside. ==Detailed Walkthrough==
The Legend of Gauldur
"The history of Skyrim is vast, predating even the most ancient records of man and mer. Much has been lost, fallen to the ravages of war or the turning of the ages. But nothing is ever truly forgotten. Where no records exist, legends and folk tales offer us a key to the past, a way to piece together truths half-remembered in the minds of men."

The easiest way to uncover one of the best-kept secrets in Skyrim is to locate and read the book Lost Legends for a bit of guesswork on the tragic events that took place back in the First Era. Due to the secrecy surrounding the Gauldur legend, the author will rely mostly on guesswork and will provide two possible takes on Gauldur’s demise. Gauldur, once an incredibly powerful wizard in the courts of King Harald, was assassinated by either the king himself, or by his three sons, Jyrik, Mikrul, and Sigdis Gauldurson. Both theories suggest jealousy as the main motive. The legend then tells about how the three sons had to flee into the night, immediately chased by King Harald’s warriors, lead by battlemage Lord Geirmund. The books mentions that one of the brothers disappeared into Folgunthur and the others were run into the ground soon thereafter.

A Key to the Past
Reading Lost Legends is the way to go if you want to initiate the quest properly and learn every detail about Gauldur and his sons (see book locations here). Note that a few other items scattered around Skyrim will start the quest as well, but can also break it. <br>The quest-related items and subsequent actions are as follows:
# Read Daynas Valen's Notes, found on his corpse inside Folgunthur, then proceed as instructed.

Another quest-related item, namely Daynas Valen's Journal can be found and read in the camp outside of Folgunthur but can break the quest if read at the wrong time (see bugs section for more information) and should only be read when the quest marker points to it.

Folgunthur
After reading Lost Legends the quest will start right away. Your first objective is to investigate the Gauldur legend. As mentioned in the book, the only known location is the Nord ruin of Folgunthur, south of Solitude. When you arrive you will notice an abandoned camp set up right outside the ruin entrance. Investigate the tents for an interesting journal scribbled down by Daynas Valen, a Dunmer obsessed with the legend, who searched all over Cyrodiil for clues. The search eventually brought him to Skyrim and Folgunthur; follow your map marker into the ruin.

Immediately upon entering it is evident that someone was there before. An adventurer, obviously overlooked the pressure plate and the corresponding spear trap. More supporting evidence can be found in the first room where a Dragon Claw puzzle and surrounding pillars have been solved already. Moving on, past the charred remains of yet another adventurer, you will encounter a draugr and a huge room which immediately seals behind you. Several draugr enemies will break out of their coffins and attack. Using the oil on the floor will be to your advantage. Locate the spiral staircase to the north and beware of the disappearing grate. Should you fall into the water, just locate the handles and pull yourself back out. Head upstairs and locate the dead body of Daynas Valen leaning against another Dragon Claw trigger. Examine his body for the Ivory Dragon Claw and his essential Notes; make sure to read them as instructed. This will add three new map markers and three new objectives which will reveal the truth about Gauldur and his three sons.

After reading the notes, insert the Ivory Dragon Claw in the keyhole and cross the bridge. Proceed through the catacombs and fight the draugr enemies until four gates blocks the path. Investigate the wall for four corresponding handles. While facing the gates, pull the first one on the right, the second on the left and the first on the left to open all four gates. Head down the stony steps and watch out for the falling boulders in the next room. Four draugrs and another puzzle waits in the next room, along with three symbols in the neighboring room. The first room contains an iron chain and two handles next to the thrones. The chain will only release a few darts at the moment, so check out the symbols in the neighboring room. Facing north, counterclockwise, the symbols are: snake, fish, eagle. Pull any of the handles in the previous room, which will reveal a new room and release a high level draugr. The movable pillars will have to reflect the ones you just saw, so face north and turn them so they match clockwise. Return to the first room and pull the chain, which will now remove the grate leading downstairs.

The damp underground area hosts a few frostbite spiders. As you surface from the water, six draugr enemies will burst out of their coffins and attack. The Sealed stone gate will require you to examine the claw found on Daynas Valen’s body: Bird, bird, dragon. Turn the rings and insert the claw in the keyhole and watch the wall disappear. Finally, make your way to Folgunthur Crypt and prepare for battle.

Mikrul Gauldurson
The final resting place for Mikrul Gauldurson is a large chamber, that when approach, will see Mikrul himself smash open his coffin. Soon accompanied by four draugr thrall from the sides the battle with Mikrule will begin. Mikrul himself is a powerful draugr and will use a frost cloak and frostbite spells along with the leveled Gauldur Blackblade, a One-handed sword with a Absorb Health enchantment. Pick the fight and focus on Mikrul as the other draugr will only do minor damage. When he is disposed of, search his body for the writ of sealing, his leveled blade and, most importantly, the Gauldur Amulet Fragment. This fragment is one out of three pieces of Gauldur’s powerful amulet, stolen by the brothers after the murder. Even though it is referred to as a fragment, it is a fully functional amulet that increases your health 30 points. Lastly, use the claw on the southern wall for access to a boss leveled chest and a word wall with one of words for the Frost Breath shout.
NewLine
Saarthal
As part of your initiation into the College of Winterhold, you will have to participate in an expedition to one of the earliest Nord settlements in Skyrim. This settlement happens to be none other than Saarthal. The related quest, Under Saarthal, is the only way to access the ruin so join college professor Tolfdir on what is meant as an educational journey for college newcomers. The trek through the ruin will reveal more than one secret, along with the sealed resting place of Jyrik Gauldurson, your next target for the Forbidden Legend quest. However, make Under Saarthal your active quest for now.

The magical seals around the tombs are exactly what the college is interested in, and an excited Tolfdir will invite you into the first zone, Saarthal Excavation. He will eventually point you towards Arniel Gane, one of the scholars. Proceed north into another giant chamber connected with wobbly planks to step on. Investigate the chamber for a bit of minor loot then find the tunnel with Arniel. He will reluctantly ask you to find four magical artifacts, so follow the map marker around and pick up three enchanted rings. When you try and pick up the ancient amulet from the strange wall in the northern room, a gate will immediately close and lock you inside the small area. A concerned Tolfdir will come rushing and, through the fence, suggest that the amulet is useful. The amulet, now called Saarthal Amulet will, when equipped, make a resonance on the nearby wall. Follow Tolfdir's suggestion and use a spell on the wall and it will burst and provide access for both you and Tolfdir. You can return the enchanted rings to Arniel at this point. However, Arniel will show no interest whatsoever, hinting that the entire expedition is a cover-up for something bigger.

Following Tolfdir leads to an altar and a strange vision. Nerien will appear in a ghostly mist and warn you about the dangers ahead and ensure you the Psijic Order will watch over you. After the vision it becomes apparent that Tolfdir didn’t see anything and telling him gets another confusing response. The old mage will then investigate the coffins and be attacked by draugr enemies. Help him dispose of them. Follow Tolfdir to another gate and pull the lever. The next room contains four draugr enemies and two pull chains near an inaccessible door. Tolfdir will be more excited than ever and will stay in the room a while and encourage you to move on. When you pull the chains the gate behind you will close, but you will now have access to the age-old ruin of Saarthal.

Saarthal welcomes you with an elemental fire rune and several draugrs. Climb the wooden bridge and fight a high-leveled draugr, then examine the area for some minor loot in locked chests and locate the iron door to the southeast. Watch out for the pressure plate right when the tunnel bends, then face the first puzzle. A total of six movable pillars have to match the images right behind them, so turn them appropriately and pull the lever near the gate. It opens to a large chamber occupied by an aggressive draugr deathlord who can easily disarm you with his shout; dispose of him as quickly as possible and head to the upper level and go through the door. Watch out for the elemental runes in the catacombs ahead and prepare for a much harder puzzle than the previous. Ignore the four symbols in the first part of the chamber, as the solution can be seen just above the movable pillars near the gate. Problem is, when you rotate a pillar, some of the other pillars will rotate as well. Facing the gate the two pillars to the right will cause each other to move, while the pillars to the left will cause the adjacent pillars to move. Make the first of the pillars to the left match the symbol above it, then let the second on the left ‘miss’ one turn before it matches. Make the two pillars to the right ‘miss’ one turn before they match, then turn the second pillar on the left once, so all four pillars match.

Jyrik Gauldurson
With all pillars matching, pull the lever and proceed forward and beware of the pressure plate triggering the dart trap ahead. Tolfdir will rejoin you at this point, and the final chamber lies just around the corner, so prepare yourself for boss battle and a sight to behold. A huge, glowing orb rotates in the center of the room, seemingly shielded by magic and Tolfdir will be understandably puzzled. When you approach what turns out to be the Eye of Magnus during the College of Winterhold quest line, Jyrik Gauldurson will rise from his throne near the table. Tolfdir will attack him with all he’s got, but will soon realize he is invulnerable due to the Eye of Magnus. You will have to keep Jyrik occupied while Tolfdir drains the magic from the eye, thus making Jyrik vulnerable after a short period of time. He uses an ancient nord war axe but should not give you any trouble when Tolfdir has performed his magic tricks. When he is disposed of, claim his Amulet Fragment which increases magicka by 30 points and the writ of sealing. Remember to claim the unique Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson from the table, then speak to Tolfdir. Tolfdir will ask you to return to the College of Winterhold. Make Forbidden Legends your active quest again and leave him through the western door where you will find a boss leveled chest and a word wall with a word for the Ice Form shout.
NewLeft
Geirmund's Hall
According to the research of Daynas Valen, Sigdis Gauldurson was the brother to finally slay Lord Geirmund after the defeat of his other brothers. Sigdis himself fell in the lengthy battle and Geirmund’s Hall was to be his final resting place, forever sealed and protected by the earthly remains of Geirmund. It is found on an island straight east of Ivarstead, conveniently surrounded by Lake Geir. Compared to the other two tombs Geirmund’s Hall is rather small but it soon becomes apparent exactly why Geirmund fell to Sigdis.

Upon entering, fight a few residing skeevers and examine yet another dead adventurer. Locate the deep pit in the center of the chamber and make sure you have stocked up on supplies then take the long fall into the depths, where you will land in an underground lake. Examine the water for a tunnel with some treasure, then head up the wooden bridge and open the door. Two frostbite spiders will protect their nest and a locked door hiding some minor loot. Beware of the plate triggering a dart trap and proceed to the first a flooded puzzle chamber. Dispose of the residing draugr enemies and claim the common soul gem from the plate on the table but beware of the corresponding battering ram.

Return to the stairs near the entrance to the chamber and take a look at the symbols on the walls. Facing the stairs leading down into the chamber, the symbols on the left are Bird, Fish; on the right, they are Fish, Snake. Your task is to rotate the pillars on the walls to match these symbols, in the same order and on the same walls so place yourself against the southernmost wall facing north. Proceed forward and turn the pillars to the left and right to positions matching the entrance. Pull the lever and head up the stairs and proceed to the next room, a narrow chamber in two levels. Take the wooden bridge to the upper level and behold the sight of Archmage Geirmund, the mighty slayer of the three brothers, now reduced to a draugr-like skeleton on a pedestal. Read his epitaph and claim the key from his fingers. Use it to unlock the nearby door, then fight another draugr protecting an arcane enchanter.

Take the western stairs and follow the tunnel as it bends until you reach a lever and a raised wooden bridge. Stay away from the obvious lever as it will only release a set of spikes and investigate the wall to the west of the obvious lever for another, clearly hidden, lever that will lower the bridge. From the bridge, it is optional to jump down on a secret ledge to the southwest for a locked chest protected by a spellcaster trap. Get back on track and lower the second bridge for yet more draugr enemies and a hall protected by swinging blades. Make your way through and turn them off using the chain on the wall. Proceed forward until you enter a flooded room with several platforms and a mysterious mist coming from the water. This is the final resting place for Sigdis Gauldurson.
Sigdis Gauldurson
Before heading up the wooden bridge, take a look around the chamber. All the platforms can easily be reached from below and if you are a melee fighter, you will need this knowledge later. Ranged skirmishers will only need to climb one platform once.

Head up the bridge and approach the coffin, which will make Sigdis break out and immediately teleport to any of the three pedestals around the room. He will then conjure two illusions of himself, placed on the platforms. If you kill the illusions, Sigdis will simply teleport and create two new ones, so there's not much point in going after the illusions at all. You must find the real one and defeat him.

How to quickly distinguish between the real Sigdis and his Illusions
*The real Sigdis does not glow blue like the illusions do
*The illusions have glowing purple runes on them; the real Sigdis does not
*The real Sigdis' health bar goes down when he is hit; the illusions generally die in one hit
*The real Sigdis has a helm with horns curled down, like an ancient Nord helm; the illusions have helms with the horns straight and pointed upward

If you approach Sigdis, he will generally try to deal one more hit of damage before teleporting and summoning new illusions. This rapid room-crossing can be tricky to overcome for melee-dependent classes. Ranged classes can quickly climb onto either of the central platforms and snipe away. Sigdis will neither teleport to, nor create illusions on, the platform you are standing on.

Use your combat method of choice and defeat the hard boss, keep an eye on your health at all times and be careful he doesn't disarm you. When he is slain, claim his unique Gauldur Blackbow, the writ of sealing and the Gauldur Amulet Fragment (+30 points to stamina) from his corpse. Doing this will reveal a tunnel behind his coffin, leading to his treasure room which includes the boss-leveled chest, the Two-handed skill book Words and Philosophy and some scattered potions and soul gems. Find the nearby tunnel and follow it to a lever that will lower a rock wall and bring you right back to the pit you jumped into near the entrance.

(A quick and safe way for distance fighters to deal with Sigdis is to remain standing in the tunnel that enters in to the water filled cavern. Make Sigdis aware of your presence with an "unrelenting force" shout directed at his final resting place. He will wake up when the shout shakes his coffin. With Sigdis awake, quckly retract back into the entrance tunnel down to where the tunnel makes a sharp turn, two of the platforms he will teleport to can easily be seen from here and sniping with a bow will be easy. If your sneaking ability is relatively good he should not be able to spot you unless you shoot at him. When you hit him, simply strafe to the left in the tunnel until you are "hidden" again. Repeat until he is defeated.)

Reachwater Rock
After conquering Saarthal, Folgunthur and Geirmund’s Hall and defeating the undead reincarnations of Jyrik, Mikrul and Sigdis, the time has finally come to reforge the three Gauldur Amulet Fragments and put the legend to rest. You are pointed towards Reachwater Rock, a cave hidden underneath one of the waterfalls running into Karth River, southeast of Markarth. Enter the cave and head downstream. There is a chest in the water with gold and some potions in it, plus a skeleton not far away (on the bottom of the pond) with some armor.

Climb back out of the water and up to the central plateau with a deceased adventurer and a podium with the emerald dragon claw along with the unsettling ancient edict. Head to the door and examine your new dragon claw for the combination and Bear, Fish, Snake and rotate the rings to match. Insert the claw in the keyhole and the door will open, along with three similar doors further ahead.

Another puzzle door will block your path, and this time you will need the ivory dragon claw you claimed back in Folgunthur. Rotate the rings to match the Eagle, Eagle, Dragon symbols on the claw and follow the corridor a long way down toward a huge chamber with a set of stairs in the center. Notice the many coffins surrounding the area and make your way to the three Amulet Pedestals. Place a fragment on top of each pedestal and listen to the sound of the gate closing behind you.

Gauldur
The ghosts of all three murderous brothers will now appear over the pedestals and you will have to fight them all, one by one. First up is Mikrul, who appears near the recently closed gate along with an army of draugr thrall. Pick the chaotic fight and watch the ghost of Mikrul disappear and kneel next to his brothers when you slay him. Next up is Sigdis, the hardest of the three who will repeat his old trick, spawning three fake clones this time around instead of two. The real Sigdis has a different helmet to the copies, making him easy to identify. Keep an eye on your health at all times and remember to pick up your weapon if you are disarmed. Jyrik is the last one and he will teleport himself around at random times and summon daedric enemies to help him out. Take him down and watch the last of the three ghosts fall to the ground. As the three of them try to get back on their feet, Gauldur himself will appear and blow them all away with a gigantic explosion. He will then forge the three amulet pieces into one, finally ending the curse and providing your reward. The complete Gauldur Amulet which increases your health, magicka and stamina by 30 points. Before you leave, take a look at the skeleton remains of Gauldur, the powerful wizard murdered by his own sons hundreds of years ago. Search the bones for a considerable amount of gold then leave. On your way out, a hidden wall will have lowered, revealing even more rewards for your tireless quest for the truth, a boss leveled treasure chest.
