Using Telekinesis

I know this is going to sound dumb, but how do I use Telekinesis? When I cast the spell, I can open a chest that's quite a long way from me, but if I then try to take anything from the chest, I get caught. This is before the spell wears off, btw. What am I doing wrong?

I'm not really sure about this, I haven't used Telekinesis very much in Morrowind, but I believe Telekinesis doesn't make you immune to getting caught for stealing. But if you stay hidden while using it, you shouldn't get caught.

Ah, right. I thought it meant you could take stuff from a distance without being seen.

Maybe I'll try a Chameleon spell.

No problem.
Telekinesis could be useful, because I think if you stay hiding behind a corner or something, it will be easier to steal things, than if you have to be right in front of it.
But Chameleon+Sneak+Telekinesis is probably a very good combination.
I'm no pro, though.

I'll keep the Amulet of Shadows thing in reserve for the time being.

PS, I just realised that I already know about the Amulet of Shadows; this is the fourth time I've played Morrowind and each time I take on a different type of character. I've encountered the A.o.S scenario every time.

With telekinesis you can usually find a piller or something to hide behind. If you can't see their eyes they can't see you. Telekinesis is also useful for booby trapped containers. You can unlock them with an open spell and open them from far enough away that the trap does no harm. Usefull if you have no lockpick skills at all.

when i used tk, i always tested who was watching by sneaking. The instant the sneak icon appears, use tk. People can still often see you steal even when youre hidden by 80% chameleon up (esp in those nice house treasuries), its just that they usually can't attack you

And, in case you want to search an area in advance, or otherwise stay 100% unseen, you can use the Invisibility spell or items enchanted with it. But that spell looses its effect if you open a door, or something, so you have to be careful with that.
